Along with new styling, this new midsize truck should be a strong competitor. The Chevy Colorado fills GM's marketing plan of having a small, medium and large truck. It is 6 inches narrower, 18 inches shorter, 3 inches lower and nearly 1,000 lbs lighter than the larger Silverado. It has a much more sporty styling and has dropped some of the square looks of past models. The smaller truck shares some of the larger trucks innovations like the tailgate step, aluminum hood, triple sealing on doors for quiet ride and instrument panel upgrades with 8-inch navigation screen with the MyLink system. [more] As exciting as the styling changes are is the news of a diesel engine offering. Coming in 2016, the 2.8L, 4-cyl "baby" Duramax diesel engine will most likely have 200 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque. If it follow the Ram's EcoDiesel offering, the engine will have an upcharge of several thousand dollars yet it will have superior low-end torque and MPGs. The Colorado will also come with a base 2.5L, 4-cyl engine rated at 193 HP and 184 lb-ft of torque as well as a 3.6L V-6 with 302 HP and 207 lb-ft of torque. GM has decided to offer just three trim levels - a WT (work truck), LT and Z71. Also, it will be offered with a 5-foot or 6-foot bed in either an extended cab or crew cab (no regular cab). The lack of choices might work to their benefit with less consumer confusion. Currently, the Toyota Tacoma dominates the market. GM says it will try to cut into that market share as well as try to attract Ram and Ford customers looking for a midsize option. It also plans on filling a void for a midsize fleet truck since the Ranger left the market. The truck will probably be offered at under $20k to create a price gap between it and the larger Silverado. Expecations are that it will get fuel economy in the mid 20s with the diesel possibly hitting the high 20s or 30. What's the big deal? Well, this may be the first 360 barrel roll done by a truck that has ever been successful and caught on tape. Whether it is or is not, it is very impressive. Baja 1000 racer Adrian "Wildman" Cenni makes a clean jump and sticks the landing. His nickname definitely makes sense now! How to Start your Vintage Toy Muscle Car Collection 11/18/2013 10:57:00 AM MovieCars Ever since motorized vehicles have been introduced to the world, numerous people have been fascinated about them and a number of these people have developed a deep fashion for them. Some of them have started this passion even while they are still young; this led to a collection of toy cars. A small number of these car buffs have been fortunate enough to have huge resources which can allow them to start a collection of real cars. Others though could only content themselves with just enlarging their toy car collection. [more]Today, many toy car collectors do not consider their collection to be complete unless they have included vintage toy muscle cars. A toy car collection though doesnt have to mean that you have to have a car that would represent every era, every sector, and every type of produced car there is. You may be interested only on Formula One race cars, or your collection may just be on a certain muscle car manufacturer, in this case, this is all about starting a collection of vintage toy muscle cars. When you start your vintage toy car collection, you may be shocked to find out that there are thousands of other collectors out there that share your same interest. This is a good indication as these other people may be able to help you out. You will be able to get a lot of information about collecting vintage toy cars as this is not an uncommon hobby. Since you have already decided that your toy car collection would be on vintage cars, you know have to decide how much you can afford to start your collection. Remember, you dont have to go for the oldest and most expensive pieces. Starting a collection with new vintage car toys is well enough, with proper care, such as taking good care of their boxes, these pieces can be very valuable in the future. Try to visit some of the garage sales being done in or around your area. Many gems have been discovered in these sales. Try also to go to collectible shops, establish a reputation as a collector as this will get you into the vintage toy car circles. If other collectors know that you are a collector as well, you will be able to establish connections and get valuable information. Sooner or later, people will be contacting you about their finds and this will help ease the burden in looking for vintage car collectibles. Online auction sites are also good sources for finding vintage toy cars. Many say that they were able to find great bargains in auction sites like eBay. Establishing a reputation as a vintage toy car collector in these auction sites will allow the sellers to directly contact you when they have pieces to sell. It is important that you should do a good research first and have vast knowledge about the history of vintage toy cars. This will hugely help you in determining if the price of the vintage toy car is right. Know about the history of toy cars and the materials used and their manufacturers so you can have proper assessment of their value. Also, have a proper place where you can store your collection. A good display case will be able to protect your vintage toy car collection from the elements and still allow it to be viewed. Make sure to have a list of all your pieces in your collection and record their characteristics as well, this will be important especially if you want to sell your collection later on. You can find cheap display cases at swap meets, I always go to the sunday outdoor swapmeet at the APU in azusa, CA. Tesla Plans F-150 Competitor in Next 5 Years 11/15/2013 10:50:00 AM testerdahl Tesla's CEO Elon Musk recently announced that Tesla is going after the F-150 and plans to introduce a competitor in the next 5 years. Is this hot air or a real plan? Musk was quoted in a CNN Money article as saying that Tesla is going after the number one vehicle in the U.S., the F-150. He basically says that if Tesla plans to target the highest gasoline use and transform it into an electric-powered vehicle, the target has to be the F-150. [more] While Musk is correct in thinking that the U.S. could dramatically reduce our gasoline dependence, it is hard to see an electric-powered pickup making sense. These trucks are large, heavy and used for multiple tasks. There are real durability concerns as well with Tesla battery packs and their recent string of fires. Does it make sense for Tesla to go after the market leading F-150? Yep. Can they offer a true competitior? That remains to be seen with many obstacles facing them. The Mercedes 300TE: Everlasting Interior? 11/14/2013 11:32:00 AM GTwildfire After having done a lot to the outside of the car, I started cleaning out and cleaning up the interior and to see what needed to be done inside the car.I knew the seats were in great condition, but hadn't really paid much attention till I started... You know how even junkers can look great in online photos, a sort of Craigslist Effect, that combination of wishful thinking and limited image resolution fooling the brain into making things look great? [more]No kidding, put your face in person as close to these seats. Even the driver's seat looks great.I really can't explain it, except yeah... great build quality... but this car is almost 25 years old, and has 267,000 miles on it. Beside that, even other Mercedes' seats of similar age don't look this good. It hadn't been garage-kept. It was parked on the street in Philadelphia. Most of the wear and dirt is in the cargo area, which will be cleaned. There are a couple minor broken things to fix, and the B and C pillar vinyl will need to be reglued, but pretty much everything's there and in awesome shape. So has anyone else had a car with a leather interior that didnt crack or age? Maybe this isn't leather in the car, but whatever it is, it's amazing. Tesla is Feeling the Heat 11/13/2013 11:10:00 AM GTwildfire The conspiracist side of me thinks "if the powers that be couldn't take out Tesla then, they found a way now".I usually like to keep my conspiracist-side bound and gagged unless a conspiracy would be way more obvious, and though the thought was tantalizing for a moment, chances are these incinerative incidents are legit... [more]Tesla's design has "Armored" the underside of the battery, which is present at the floor of the vehicle, and it seems that armor isn't good enough under certain circumstances. I'm not sure what the numbers are, incidents vs. units sold... but I would bet Tesla has a way to go before it becomes a match for Lamborghini's inflamatory reputation... Still I would give body parts - MY body parts - for a Lamborghini. When the Ford Pinto became a crash with a flash, did the surviving owners say "Yes Sir Please, may I have another!"No. I don't believe they did.The ones that weren't hit weren't followed by a long heritage of future Pintos. Alas, the Pinto was only a flash in the pan, a punchline... once the next-of-kin might finally laugh about it, if ever.So what's to become of Tesla? If anyone has followed this guy named Elon Musk, you may have realized by now he's not short on brains or the ability to surround himself with an effective team. Pretty obvious when you build an automotive company from scratch making cars that use propulsion technology that has relegated every other company who tried... to little more than Wikipedia articles and Google image searches. The most telling evidence so far, from the three simmering Model S's, is that from what I've heard, they want another. These unlucky Tesla owners think the Model S is hot in more than just the literal sense. Unlike lead-acid batteries, that goes a long way.Only time will tell how much damage Tesla, the company will receive. Personally, This setback better be managed and remedied well, because that's what is expected from a company that is relying on its reputation, most likely more than any other automaker at this moment. How to Choose a Color for Your Restoration 11/12/2013 9:53:00 AM PrecisionRestor Thinking about changing colors What to consider. Choosing a paint color for you restoration can be quite a struggle. With subtle differences from one color to the next, finding that perfect color takes a little bit of patience and home work. These are a few tips to help you choose what fits, what looks good, and what will ultimately make you happy.[more] The first place to start is the original color. Depending on how you plan to restore you ride, you should at least consider the original color. Many older vehicles have an identification tag or plate that will give you information about the original color. When you cant find this information, you will need a visual reference. Even an old rusty car may have some of the original paint under a bolt or a piece of trim, but the best reference needs to be on the body its self. Bolt on parts like doors and fenders are easily replaceable, and may have been replaced throughout its life. Using the body shell is your safest bet when it comes to discovering your original color. When deciding on the original color, the first thing to consider is how original you plan to keep the car. If you have an all numbers matching Super Sport Chevelle, it may not be the best decision to change colors. On the other had if you have a 6 cylinder Malibu, and plan make some significant changes to the drive train and interior, changing colors wouldnt be a big deal. Varying from the original color may cause additional work that may not have been considered. To properly change colors, door jams, engine compartments, and even the insides of quarter panels in the truck need to be painted. For this to happen, panels need to be removed, and proper prep work need to be done to ensure the paint in the jambs holds up as long as the exterior. The goal with a color change is to completely eliminate any signs of the old color, whether its around bolt heads , on hinges, or even in the interior, a color change needs to be complete for things to look correct. When changing from the original color, I always try to use a color from within the same era. Using color charts from the same year make and model is a good reference point. Finding what alternative colors could have been used on the car from the factory. The next step to take is finding colors from different makes and models from around the same time frame. Your color can still be era correct, but may not be a specific color designated to that car. The older color chip books can usually be found at a local paint distributor. Another place to look for your new color is on the new and used car lots. Take a stroll through a dealership finding what catches your eye. Take down the year, make, and model, if you know where to look a paint code is always helpful. After you have come up with your ideas, have your restoration shop mix and spray you samples. We paint individual 4 x 6 cards for samples. These cards can be compared side by side, tilted and turned, and looked at in the sun and shade to give you comparisons from one color or shade to the next. Overall a color change is up to your individual taste. Theres no reason you should go through the steps of restoration or paint job and not get what you want. This biggest thing to do is rely on the opinions of the paint professionals, and make sure you eliminate what you dont like before you decide on what you like. A paint color is about personal opinion, so get what you want. Toyota Officially Kills FJ Cruiser - Builds Special Farewell Edition 11/6/2013 11:49:00 AM testerdahl It's official, Toyota has killed the FJ Cruiser. It's death has been widly rumored for quite a while. As a special send off, Toyota has built what it calls the Trail Teams Ultimate Edition. The death of the FJ can largely be attributed to the upcoming 2016 CAFE requirements according to a story on [more] For the special edition, Toyota has specially tuned the FJ with Bilstein race shocks with increased damping, articulation and high speed stabilty. It also has improved clearance thanks to the shocks as well as a new front skid plate. Also, there are special BF Goodrich A/T KO tires on 16-inch bead lock wheels. The rock rails and roof rack equipped FJ is only available in 4x4 with Active Traction Control, Crawl Control and Vehicle Skid Control with off switch and electroncially controlled locking rear differentials. The Mercedes 300TE: A Race Against Time (Continued) 11/4/2013 2:09:00 PM GTwildfire The door of this Mercedes was bashed in pretty badly. Normally I would just replace the door and paint it, but finding one would have been difficult, and whoever had it would probably know that... so I had to work with what I had. Body filler is like makeup on Women... less is more. I did everything I could to straighten out the dent, having worked the steel from both inside and out before going into mud mode. Several hours and about 10 applications later... [more] There is still some to do, but it is almost ready for paint. Bodywork like this starts out in general terms and eventually turns into micromanagement until you decide when it's ready. The trick is not to quit before it's good enough for anyone else.oh and in case you were wondering, I titled the posts "a race against time" because I don't have a garage, and November is right around the corner.More later... The Mercedes 300TE: A Race Against Time 11/4/2013 10:49:00 AM GTwildfire So this is the latest acquisition, a 1989 Mercedes 300TE.Unlike almost every car I have ever bought, I don't have to replace any bushings or ball joints. Most of the work is on the body, and there are a couple of minor fixes I need to do inside as well. For a 24 year old car with 267,000 miles on the odometer, she looks pretty good. [more] ...but that driver-side back door has a dent with a lot of deflection, more than an inch. Even in this photograph you can see the crash bar left a ridge that has rusted.I'm not a fan of the grey bumpers and black moldings either, so they will be changed to match the body. This car reminded me a little of a Ford Escort wagon, all the more reason to refresh its appearance and make it looking more like a Mercedes...Though I started by working on the rusted jack holes in the rockers, diverting my attention to refinishing the front bumper was unavoidable. The jack holes were unsightly and seemed unnecessary. I'll just keep a trolley jack in the car instead, which is probably safer anyway.I'm fabricating custom-fitted .1" aluminum plates. The edges will be beveled and as you see the screws will be countersunk, then filled over to conceal them.More later... The Mercedes 300TE: A Battlewagon, Apparently. 10/31/2013 12:15:00 PM GTwildfire After just having one of these cars figuratively fall into my lap, I did what I always do... research. I always do my research before I buy, but the car I bought was owned by the now-deceased Mother of a neighbor, and he wanted me to own it. So while wading through all the search results recenty, I ran across this. The show is "Fifth Gear" mind you, not to be confused with a certain other show. There is no Captain Slow, nor a Hamster or a Palm Tree named Jeremy but there is a Blonde, and she enjoys smashing the hell out of this 300TE in a 4-part series on YouTube. [more] The picture you are seeing is from Part 3, the Structural test. The car drove away.In Part 2, the Electronics test, they made the car float, then sink in 3 feet of water. After pulling the spark plugs and turning over the engine to evacuate the water... she started right up and drove away...Ultimately, in the last segment they took the W124's reputation of being "Bomb Proof" literally...Even Rasputin died eventually, and it seems it took just as many attempts to kill this Mercedes. Quite a thing to find when you have one sitting in your driveway. Now for it to live up to my expectations.Mine has 267,000 miles on it. You can stand a Bic lighter on the valve cover while the engine is running, and the suspension is flawless. It does have some minor body rust problems and a dent. This large, offroad beast gets brawny and more agile in its latest edition. KGP Photography tooks the pics and says that the new Power Wagon gets plenty of new things like a 6.4-lieter Hemi engine with cylinder deactivation and a rear coil spring suspension that makes it more agile and flexs more. It also has new blackout headlight clusters with projector beam and an LED strip. The grille gets a heavy dose of chrome too (like it or not). [more] While many of the new features are carried over from other Ram models it seems the air suspension system may not be. This is the suspension that allows you to lower and raise the truck based on your driving conditions and needs. It is similar to the ones used in semi trucks. With the Power Wagon built for offroad usage, it would be hard to envision the air suspension system being much use since it is really useful for highway driving and not so much elsewhere. The new features on the 2014 Power Wagon will help it stay competitive in its competition with other, similar trucks like the Ford Raptor. Video Review: 640hp Brabus/Kleeman Mercedes CLS 55 AMG by ZR Auto 10/28/2013 10:38:00 AM MattHayhurst It's loud, it's in your face and it packs a serious punch! This Mercedes CLS 55 AMG is more than just a four-door commuter car, it's an absolute monster. With 640hp under the hood and a whole arsenal of aftermarket parts from Kleeman and Brabus, there's a lot to like. When Zahir Rana of ZR Auto got ahold of a beige 2006 CLS 55 AMG, he already had ideas to turn the car from an already edgy four-seater to a super-powered behemoth. Weighing in at 4300 pounds, this CLS is no lightweight. ZR Auto, in collaboration with Kleeman, decided to go big with this build. [more] This CLS AMG boasts 5400cc Supercharged 32 Valve V8, a modified ECU unit, increased boost via pulleys, Kleemann Cams, Hi-flow cats, High flow stainless Kleemann Headers, High flow Kleemann dual exhaust, Kleemann induction kit, intercooler upgrade kit and forged Brabus wheels for better handling. Other than that, the car remains how the engineers at AMG left it. The technicians at ZR Auto wrapped the entire exterior of the car orange with matte black accents to make it more noticable. After all, that's what ZR Auto is all about. When I was handed the keys to this orange monster for a day, I knew I was in for a treat! Pulling out of the lot, the Kleeman duel exhaust screamed as the car quickly entered second gear. One noticeable aspect of this modified AMG is that it has a lot of get-up-and-go! It doesn't take much convincing to get this hungry monster going fast. Just a tap of your toe on the accelerator and you're off. The tricky part was navigating through the busy Friday morning streets without being tempted to go fast. As I made our way out of the city for a wide-open drive on Alberta's long stretches of highway, fellow motorists slowed down, sped up, pulled out their phones and took pictures of the car. Driving an orange Mercedes sure does draw a lot of attention. Having never driven such a car, I noticed plenty of pedestrians and motorists doing double-takes as the car crept past. It's difficult to sneak when the exhaust sounds like a snarling angry bull chasing down a matador. I knew the car would get noticed, but I didn't expect to be boxed in by traffic with motorists vying for opportunities to take photos and videos. Finally I got out of the city and hit the highway. When I opened up the throttle for the first time, it became obvious exactly how power-hungry this car actually is. We've seen this car in action before when I drove with ZR Auto to Banff with the Ferrari ZXX for, but keeping that Kleeman-powered AMG in a straight line isn't exactly what you'd think. Then again, with 640 rear-wheel horsepower propelling the car down the highway, what else should I have expected? The car moves incredibly fast, almost to the point that you begin to forget that you're driving a fairly heavy four-door luxury sedan. Performance-wise, it can keep up with many Ferrari's and Lamborghini's, yet it's a lot more practical. Plus you get the advantage of having the ability to give more than one friend a ride at the same time. ZR Auto and Kleeman tuned the car to have a top speed of 310km/h. Though I didn't even dare attempt that, the car moves very quickly. ZR Auto claims the car can do 0-100km/h in 4.3 seconds. I launched the car from a standstill and were very impressed by how quickly it accelerated. When I took the car to cruising speed, I found that the CLS AMG was very smooth in terms of handling. It still feels like a luxury Mercedes when you maintain a certain speed. It's when you accelerate from a stop or make a pass on the freeway that it starts to feel a bit more like a performance exotic. Since this CLS AMG is driven by Zahir Rana daily, it combines performance and luxury very well. The interior is very spacious and full of all the features you would expect from a Mercedes CLS model. The seats absorb your body and hold you in place as you drive, the climate control adjusts itself based on your desired settings, the gauges are clearly laid-out and visibility from the driver's seat is ample. It's a car you could take on a long drive and not end up sore when you arrive at your destination. ZR Auto specializes in giving already powerful cars even more power. This Mercedes just goes to show that you don't need a Ferrari or Lamborghini to go fast. You can still roll in comfort and style with enough power to keep up with the best of them. Overall, the car was plenty of fun to drive both in the city and on the freeway.
