Jonathan Ward has a new project, but it's not a Toyota. This time around he's building old school Broncos, and he's gotten everyone from Ford corporate to Art Morrision to Camilo Pardo to Nike involved. The first five are already sold and are being built now. Oh, and did I mention Coyote power? Jonathan is documenting his new project on CarDomain, so check it out!

I realize dealers have to exhaust every possible avenue these days, but in this era of sluggish sales I do wonder if any of these guys have any luck selling ultra-high-dollar exotics and antiques on eBay. This 1934 Duesenberg is an absolutely stunning example, and there's a lot of verbiage on the seller's site about the investment value of old cars:

"As the world rushes into hard assets ahead of collapsing paper money, sales of top notch classic cars are exploding. Remember, they aren't making anymore #1 condition 1958 Chevrolet Impala Convertibles! In times of economic uncertainty, capital flows to the highest quality assets which contain the least amount of risk and the classic car market is no exception. The lesson is simple: buy the very best you can find!"

A little counterintutive, because cars with very few exceptions are some of the most guaranteed-to-depreciate assets there are. And for two million dollars? I can't imagine it's likely to go much higher than that, and anyone with that much money to throw into a frivolous vehicle purchase probably isn't overly concerned about where its value is going to go anyway. What do you think? Check out the auction!

I recently heard from Toby Peterson, owner of DMC Northwest in Bellevue. He's just finishing up the build on a custom right-hand drive conversion on a DeLorean he's shipping to a customer in Australia. The NOS and reproduction parts infrastructure for these cars is pretty incredible, but since there is nothing made specifically for a RHD DeLorean, Toby pretty much had to reinvent the wheel (literally!) on this one. The car is an early '81 that's been sitting in a garage since 1997, so it's cool to see it get a new lease on life. We'll probably have some more details and pics as he puts the finishing touches on the project, so stay tuned. One more below the jump!

Rotary engines are cool and all, but they are not that great when it comes to gas mileage and emissions (durability isn't a strong point, either). So do they have a future? Wards Auto is reporting that Mazda has halted rotary development for now, which is not a good sign. Obviously the rotary is a huge part of Mazda's history. But will that be enough to keep the engine alive? Perhaps if the Japanese economy improves we'll see the rotary again in a new Mazda. But I wouldn't hold my breath.

Obviously, this is the new BatWing in these vids. Kind of a floating Tumbler. Imagine a cool high-pitched helicopter wail, mixed with some random popping and thrusting. That, or it's electric and sounds like my Magic Bullitt... Video after the jump!

One thing about living in Germany: all of the big suspension companies are located right here, so the options for lowering your car are almost endless. I ordered up a set of "Sportfahrwerk" (sport suspension) from Weitec, the little sister of suspension giant KW Automotive last weekend. They arrived on saturday morning, and I think I gave the DHL guy a heart attack as I was so excited to get the box. It shipped directly from KW's HQ. One of the reasons I picked this kit is that I like to use the Golf as the wagon it is, so matching the rear axle load rating is very important. Since only KW and Weitec offer suitable springs, it was a matter of money—rumor is that the parts are the same, and only the warranties and spring colors (bright yellow, yuck!) differ. That's good enough for me. I'll post pics of the install when I get going with it: this will be my first full solo suspension install, and I don't have my usual Michigan safety net. Wish me luck!

Friday night I got home after a full workday, but weeks of thought and preparation made me push the tiredness aside and put the Camaro up on jackstands. It was time for a cat-back exhaust system replacement.

I had been scheming on centering the exhaust like that of a Corvette, but the stainless oval exhaust tips were over a foot long, and clearance issues dictated that the pipes needed a straight shot to the back. So, it was a lot of work but the ride now sports a fresh Flowmaster 80 flowing through 2.5" pipes. I finished up on Saturday so I could enjoy disturbing the peace (although that's Cherry Bomb's claim to fame).

How about you? What did you do this weekend?

NASCAR has Daytona, endurance racers have Le Mans, crap-can racers have ChumpCar, and kids who race soap box have the All-American Soap Box Derby World Championships in Akron, Ohio. For a kid involved in gravity racing there is no bigger achievement than the three lane "show" at Derby Downs. This year Krider Racing went to the big race to check it out.
