I'm a longtime advocate of pace-car ownership, and I'm always stoked when I find a pacer I hadn't previously known about... especially on CarDomain! Stage2turbo6's 1976 Buick Century "Free Spirit" Indy pace car replica is an ultra clean time capsule as well as a cool piece of motorsports history. Check out the ride page!

If you never knew of the Free Spirit coupe, then you never herd of the Free Spirit wagon. All factory. http://www.cars-on-line.com/41200/88buick41293-1.jpg

Man I miss my 77 Le Sabre Turbo Coupe, one of those "never should have got rid of it" cars.

I have always loved old Buick's since my family owned a "59 Le Sabre 4 door hard top(flat top). I've owned several "65 Riviera's and a "76 Electra limited four door hard top and a "77 Electra sedan. All of them great cars.

Very nice, even for a clone! I Love Buick's. I've had: '65 Riv 401/4bbl '66 Riv GS 445 Dual Quad Wildcat, '67 LeSabre 400 convt. w/high compression 340-4bbl, '66 Riv GS Wildcat 465, '72 LeSabre GS 2 dr hdtp w/Stage1 350, '73 Centurian Stage1 455, '78 LeSabre 4.1l (252 cid) turbo Sport Cpe, '74 Apollo Stage1 455, '73 Electra 225 2 dr w/455-M 4bbl. The one thing I want to ask because I have seen 4 other Pace Cars is...Were the lightning rod shifters an option, or was the dual gate; like yours; the option?

@TheSnakeOiler I don't have the answer to your shifter question, but it seems that this is a "real deal" car and not a clone. The caption on the third picture, showing the number 87 on the rear-view mirror states, "This car was apparently 1 of 150 Pace Car Replicas being driven around the Indy 500 Track. Per the original owner, this "87" decal has been on the car since it was new. It very well may have been used to I.D the car at the track." I don't think the owner was using the term "Replica" to imply that this is a "Clone" car, just one that was "replicated" from the original one that was used as the Pace Car. Besides, where would you even find the decals to make a clone like this?

@TheSnakeOiler Buick seemed to always put out some little known, very limited production car/engine combos that were bad a$$, especially in the 60's. I've had many rides in 64-65 Buicks with "special" engines and interior that could only be in support of the "Race on Sunday sell on Monday" motto. My friends used to destroy every one in his grandma's 1963 Buick Wildcat 4-dour with a 401. It was big, pink and comfortable as could be. Put your foot in it though and you were in for a ride! Anyway, I share your enthusiasm for some of these little known "sleepers". As far as I know, the "Replica" pace car was actually a limited run option available at dealerships but I'm n ot sure on the shifter as those were options on many GM cars, my dad ordered his 67' ElCamino with a Hurst dual gate shifter, very fun to drive.
