Ok, so around my way I see a lot of folks riding around in brand spanking new BMW M3s , Ferraris, Maseratis, and occasionally I’ll see a R8 or Corvette C6 and other types of "supercars." They are all nice and all, but for my opinion, waaaaaay too much technology going on for my taste. I grew up in a family where the men built and worked on the cars they owned themselves. I love horsepower like the next gearhead, but why lay down so much cash for a highly overrated super car with XXX horsepower when you can build something with way more horsepower for way less cash and still be street legal? Now I’m not knocking or hating, I’m just trying to understand that, for example, why someone would pay for a Bugatti Veyron that has 1,001 HP when an old Army bud of mine built a Nissan Skyline R34 with 1,200HP and is still daily driven???? Half the price and way more fun drive, right? I, personally, would rather spend my hard earned bucks building a car from the ground up that is way more badass. Nevermind my opinion, what's yours? Built or bought?

Half the price? Your old army buddy built a 1 million dollar r34 Skyline? Damn!

I'm with you. I totally appreciate the engineering brilliance behind cars like the Veyron, the MP4-12c, and the Aventador, but I'll likely never be rich enough to even insure one of them. I'd rather buy an old WRX and tune it to within an inch of its life. It won't go as fast, but I won't have to worry about it as much, and I'll still be spending far less.

Why buy a supercar instead of building a car? For one reliability and warranty, if any part in your friends R34 brakes I'm sure is not going to come cheap. second would be drivability, yeah some 1000plus HP builds are daily driven but I bet they're not comfortable or safe and last it will be overall quality from body fit and finish to interior materials and comfort, if any of the people building a car would spend time or money in all that then the price would be close to a used supercar if not pass it depending on materials used. Also supercars can adjust to driving conditions from street, sport or race while the R34 i'm sure is on "race" mode all the time. I see nothing wrong with either but you do get what you pay for.

You can talk about your buy, but you can brag about your build.

Why would someone by a 100 dollar t-shit with a check mark on it, when you can by a t-shirt for 10 bucks without a logo on it...It's about the prestige and the looks. To Nes: Aftermarket part on a R34 are going to cost MUCH less then, some OEM part for a Bugatti for example. "Let's just take the tires, for example: in the U.S., the Michelin Pilot Sport 2s fashioned with the Veyron's unique compound cost about $30,000" - Autoblog Warranty on your new GTR? Just check this out: http://jalopnik.com/5201918/2010-gt r-warranty-voided-for-denying-nissan-access-to-your-black-box-data So sure, you get a warranty with the car, but if you ever have any fun with it, you're on your own for fixing it anyways. So again, it comes down to the status again. When person X pulls up in a heavily modified STi pumping 600 HP, and person Y pulls up in a Ferrari with 500 HP...you know which car people are going to be standing around and asking to sit in.

This article is a total fail, calling a Bugatti veyron a highly overrated supercar wtf? Lets see that friend of yours try to go 200 mph without killing himself.

I'd like to built a car like Stacy is building on Gears. With a turbo charged coyote of course.

Any douche with money can buy...just checkout all the videos of wrecked exotics. It takes real skill to build and that makes it "priceless".

i would like to do it both ways like buy me a supercar so i can use it for the weekend and build another for the track but not over do it with the horsepower so it still can be used as a daily driver and buy a third car for for daily use

When you buy one of these crazy super-cars, you are probably doing it for the name and the numbers, but what you are actually paying for is the 1000s of hrs it takes to engineer these things. They can handle their power much better. They are going to be more flexible for the street. I think that a much better question would be built or bought: custom cars. Would you rather pay someone to build your custom dream car or do it yourself?

I have built every car and truck I have owned. I can't afford OR want to have anyone build anything for me. Where's the pride in that? I'd rather take $250,000 and buy like 40 cool project cars and a build a kick ass shop than have one piece of junk foreign sports car. If I drove around in some pre-packaged factory built super car I'd feel like the biggest dipshit ever. Give me a Ferrari and the only place I'd drive it would be to the auction house. Super cars attact attention from wannabees and blow hards. Cool junk cars that you fix up yourself make you feel good and get respect from people that understand how to build things themselves, not how a credit card and a wallet work.

Built, you KNOW what you put in it and it's added piece of mind. You can't honestly say you know EVERY piece of equipment you have under the hood of a car you simply bought.

Buy it to build it...

If I could I would buy THEN build it, like purchase say a Ford GT. 500hp is nothing these days. We have Mustangs that make more... But Mustangs don't handle like the GT does, so I'd buy a GT then twin turbo it to 1100hp. Yeah, that should do it. I mean, even if you have a Lambo, there's always room for improvement.

Built Not Bought! Anyone with money can buy a supercar. But building a sports car takes time, skill and dedication which makes the car WAY more unique and sentimental. And the look on a rich guys face when you beat his expensive "supercar" with something that was built for less than his yearly maintenance/insurance is priceless lol.

Built, unless I strike it rich. In that case, a couple builts and maybe a bought thrown in.

BOTH. Some people cant afford to do both obviously, but if you start at an already high platform say a cls63, skys the limit. There are pros and cons to both, but to those who can more power to you.

I appreciate Both. If it's built Right when Bought, certain cars should not really be touched from the factory (this does not include 99% of the DD cars sold). Built.. Is a fun trip of it's own to take. The result, and the progress towards it are very rewarding, and who doesn't like sleepers???

Both. Usually the people who say "built" are just jealous. But a GOOD build>built any day. But I'm definitely gonna turn my head at "bought".

I agree with nes, everything he said was spot on. But yopofun also had a great point. It comes down to prestige. The people who pay for their overpriced lambos, ferrari, etc. can of course afford to build up a skyline with more power but it comes down to prestige, comfort, and the looks of course. No matter how mean a skyline looks or sounds, when a Aventador pulls up, bitches will be jumping for joy. But I'd rather build, more fun and I appreciate it more.

I would never even consider buying a supercar, even if I had the money. It's just more fun to start with a basic car and build it up and make it yours. I just got a used car recently and half the fun is getting new parts and putting them on, especially when you are able to do so yourself. Talking about doing the work yourself is way better than reading the window sticker on a new car

Everyone would have their own oppinions on built not bought. When you buy a bugatti you have that piece of mind you're covered under warranty if it blows up and you're fully insured because you didn't over do it on the boost. When you spend half a million dollars which in my eyes is just too much money to invest on a skyline because unlike the bugatti the skyline won't have anyhwere close to the resale value. That loud noise, overdone engine mods and what ever other things you put on will soon come to a haul when you grow up and become more mature. My point is you have to have a lot of money to buy a bugatti and you just have to save a lot to modify a skyline.

I like supercars, they are cool. But my friends and I all build our rides, we have all put in the time and hard work to ensure everything is the way we want them. the old muscle cars and rat rods/hot rods are more appreciated. If I had the money, I would go for the 2008 Dodge Viper ACR hard top with the Hennesey Twin Turbo Kit. I say Build it if you can.

Any idiot with a trust fund can go out and buy speed or add some bolt-ons but I just rebuilt my g35 engine from the ground up and there is nothing more satisfying than hearing it fir e for the first time knowing you put in the time. That you can brag about!

If you wanna win, I doesn't matter how you do it. If I was super rich, hell yeah I would buy a lambo, ferrari, or mclaren. Since I am not, then I won't worry about it lol. Also yall need to quit hating on rich folks seriously. They did nothing to you and all of them are not cocky ass holes goodness. I say do it however you want to. You are gonna blow money either way. And why do folks keep talking about building a dam skyline? Man do you know how much money it takes to build a dam 1000 hp skyline and how reliable it would be???? Man you would come off cheaper building a 1000 hp challenger, camaro, or mustang hell. Either way you gonna spend some money if you want RELIABILITY!!! That's the key. And don't believe what folks on these forums tell you either. It's alot of dyno queens out there who don't even hardlly run their car and never even run it on the high boost that produce that dyno sheet. People front all the time.
