At what point do you generally fill up? I tend to pull into the gas station right around the empty mark, but before it goes into the red. How about you?

Our gas prices are regulated and change each Friday morning. You usually know if it's going up or down. If going up, I fill up on Thursday. I have had the low fuel light come on a couple of times, once going about 3 litres short of empty.

I never let it get below 1/4 full. I used to wait until it was only a gallon left and then feel up. Well I had 2 fuel pumps go out on me so I started filling up when there was at least 1/4. Ever since I haven't had a problem with the fuel pump. The internal fuel pumps that are in the tank are made to keep cool submerged in the gas. If you have an inline pump along the fuel line then I assume you can go longer without filling up. Even then I wouldn't take the chance.

Usually at around the 1/8 mark I'll fill up, before the yellow check light comes on.

It seems like with combined highway and city driving my tank needs filled around 300 miles on both my Dak and Neon. That is usually just above quarter tank on the gauge, but the last "quarter tank" usually goes pretty fast in my vehicles.

I always fill at one quarter of a tank. The winters here are hash and I have ended up stuck in a vehicle for quite a while in the past and without the vehicle running, -40F tends to make people slightly dead, so I always keep it over one quarter just out of habit

I fill up every 200 miles, which used to correspond with 1/2 a tank.

I usually wait until I get down to the 'E' and maybe spend $20. Which gets a little more (or less) over a 1/4 tank. That's when I'm driving around town but if I have long trip ahead of me I'll top it off.

I used to do a 1/4 to ensure the gas didn't freeze and jack up my fuel lines in the winter, but after I bought my Fiero (which had a faulty gauge for over a year btw), I realized after running out of gas in the middle of nowhere is not an ideal situation, especially with as small of a tank my Fiero has. I range about 230ish miles per tank. My Buick Century on the other hand could go about a hundred miles further. Either way, I made it a habit to fill up at a half a tank, and if the gauge doesn't work, then I do it the mathematical way...

I'm usually good for bout 300 miles or 1/2 tank on the Yaris, whichever comes first. My Escort I tend to wait till bout 1/8-1/4 tank. A lot depends on if I'm goin somewhere far or just goin home, if I'm just goin home if I got enough to get there i don't worry bout it as much

my cars light comes on around 370-380miles with 4 gallons left. i usually fill up then but i was told that i could get almost 500 out of my tank so im going to go until i run out or about 480 if i make it that far. should happen today or tomorrow since im around 420 or so.

I have a 96 civic dx hatch. I fill up exactly every 2 weeks. i drive about 35 miles a day in that car with A/C and after 10 work days it burns about 8.75- 9.0 gallons of gas.

I just don't see the point of waiting till the last possible moment. I usually start looking to fill up around the 1/4 left mark, but I am not anal about it, and won't go out of my way to fill up.

i usually never try going past a 1/4.... especially now that i bought an aftermarket fuel pump that was larger than stock. I had to angle it inside the tank. so i never take the risk of going too far under a 1/4

Yrs ago, before cars had katalysators i waited as long as possible and sometimes had to use the back-up jerrycan to reach a gasstation because the tank was empty. If i'd to that today, chances are i destroy the Kat. so these days i fill up in time, when the meter reaches R.

actually I don't rly use the fuel gauge anymore because it's a bit misajusted, so I use the daily mile meter since I kinda know how many miles I can with a full tank of gas :)

I keep it below a 1/4 tank most of the time and run it well below the E mark as it comes close to race weekend. When you're swapping fuels, you don't want a lot you have to transfer.

I actually go by miles because I don't trust the fuel gauge even though it's fairly accurate. Usually 2-gallons left by the time I fill, so pretty close to completely empty. That's even despite knowing it's best to get it before 1/4-tank because fuel cools the pump. Stopping for fuel just feels like a chore and a hassle so I put it off.

I have an Edge programmer that I have set to warn me when I am at 5% fuel left - long after the dash "fuel light" comes on. I ride to the end cause I like to see how my mileage is doing with each tank. I can get about 460miles per tank and I fill up about 29 gallons each time I hit the pump. So taking it to the end lets me see how far I can stretch my fuel. Squeezing 16 miles per gallon out of an Avalanche with 75% city driving is nothing to sneeze at.

Once the gauge levels off to a 1/4, the tank gets completely replenished.

I'm a light man, I go right to the light and far past it. I ran out of gas once 13 years ago, about 500 feet from the gas station. I drove it on the starter. Ye, driving a car on light with no money to put gas in at the time (I was 17) equals running out of gas. Luckily I was heading to the gas station anyway. I had to leave my stuff there in exchange for gas and payed it the next day. Oddly enough my fuel pump never died in 24 years, original fuel pump.

Usually fill up before 1/4, I might stretch that to an 1/8 but I rarely let the low gas light come on. On the highway during long trips, I tend to fill up at 1/2. In over 22 years of driving in various cars, I have never had to replace a fuel pump or ran out of gas, though I have come close a couple times!

I'm really bad about this. On my previa, I run it to the fumes. At least 10 miles after my lights been on. Sometimes 30. I like seeing how many miles I can get per tank and it's been over 400 plenty of times (19.8 gal tank). Most I've ever filled up was 19.4 gals. I need to stop running it that low but it's harder when you're a college student!

I like to fill her up at a quarter tank because sometimes, you can get caught in huge traffic jams so better be safe than sorry. If I am travelling in unknown territory, I like to fill her up as soon as it is down to half a tank.

I have to go get my fuel receipts. A best of 11.904 gallons into a 1990 Mazda Miata with a stock tank - need I say more? I used to be a person that would always fill at 1/2 tank because as my father used to say "it costs the same for the top half or the bottom half". That was back when I was making squat for money or even living off of my college loans, I could only afford a little here and there. Now that I am a gainfully employed adult I tend to run my gas down to E and occasionally well beyond. There is no longer the concern of whether or not I can come up with the money to get another tank of gas, and going to the station is just a hassle. I have not run out of gas (with the exception of the work truck when the gauge failed) that I can remember since I was 17. I watch my miles and gauge as I drive and so I tend to know how my mileage is going and what sort of range I have, though I have never owned a car that displayed miles to empty. The new fuels are just not as stable as the older ones were, so I run 91 octane in everything and tend to want to get all of it out and start again fresh. I don't push the motorcycles because they are too finicky about it and the range on them is poor, anyway. I don't run the work truck down if I can avoid it because it's a level of preparedness and I don't buy the fuel plus I get paid for the time to fill it. All that said - I don't mind BUYING gas - just stopping FOR gas. I view it as a pain and so I often fill my vehicles to the top of the neck. I am going to be adding a second 33 gallon tank to my K3500 in addition to the one 33 gallon that it has, just so that I have the option of driving further per fill.

IDK...I can go about 3 days on a full tank of gas then Im back at the pump... My suburban has a 44 Gallon tank in it, it can roll for days but it doesn't look like it will EVER be used as a daily driver again {:-(

It all depends on the situation for me, sometimes I have no money and am trying to stretch my cash as far as I can so I run on fumes a little more... other times i have some cash and ,make sure it's full and ready for the next time I don't

I fill every time. If my gauge works, I will fill it from the halfway point. If it doesn't work, I normally know my vehicle well enough to be able to estimate my half tank mark. Halfway is empty to me.

Also, isn't it bad for your fuel pump on an empty tank? I mean, can't there be a cooling issue with it if the fuel isn't present? Doesn't it also make it work harder to suck up the gas? If you have an old car with a metal tank, aren't you sucking up all the rust and sediment on the bottom of the tank if you let it run low? Aren't all these things bad? Running on E is just silly...

^ the pickup runs at the bottom of the tank regardless of where the fuel is.^

I usually run down to the last gallon or less. I have little time to stop for gas so I try to stretch it as far as I can. Most cars should have about three times the tank capacity they do. I don't know why the OEM's won't install bigger tanks.

Well let's see I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata SE that's rated with a 18.5 gallon tank, however if I'm patient enough and take my time, I can squeeze 20.5 - 21.2 gallons in the tank before I'm done. I'm the kind of guy that likes to run my tank as close to the edge as possible. I don't rely on the fuel gauge and use more of the trip computer and mental math than anything else. It hasn't failed me yet and I get great fuel range. I've been getting over 700 miles on a tank of gas...that takes me 3 - 3.5 weeks between fill ups. I won't fill up "early" unless I know I'm taking an extended road trip where a gas station may be out of reach.

boatdude - A vehicle with the pump inside the fuel tank, the pump uses the fuel that it's submerged in to keep it cool. I used to let my 26 gallon tank get down to just 1 gallon and I had 2 fuel pumps go out in about a 1-2 year period. After the second replacement I never let it get below 1/4 tank. Since then I haven't had it go out and this was a few years ago. If the vehicle has an inline pump in the fuel line then it can probably go as low as you want it to go, but if the pump is in the tank then don't let it go below 1/4 tank.

yes. I understand the cooling idea. luckily I've never had an issue taking it all the way down. Maybe I have in line pumps from the factory? I was referring to him picking up sediment. I've had people say the same thing about ethanol and water separation.

With boatdude13 on the fact that the fuel pickup is on the bottom of the tank no matter what, if there's crap in the tank it doesn't matter how much gas is in it. On the keeping the pump cool idea, gas going through the pump will keep it just as cool as it being in a full tank. I've lost many fuel pumps and I always fill up by a 1/4 tank but usually before that. Most of my fuel pump failures have also bee with a full tank of gas too (Murphy keeping it real!) just to make dropping the tank that muck more fun.
