This is apparently what can happen when you hit the power window switch while you've got a leaking acetylene tank on board. Ka-blammo! The driver, whose astonishing incident was republished on the ColoradoK5 forum, is indeed lucky to be alive. More barely-recognizable Toyota plastic and sheetmetal below the jump. Via Hooniverse.

By: RockShox 12/6/2011 8:55 AM I feel sorry for such a good SUV. Still looks good for a show though. |

By: MrAMC1 12/6/2011 10:51 AM The local welding store has some pics of cars and trucks blowed up after acetylene tanks went off. There is one of a '70s Impala. The tank was in the trunk and let go. It basically blew the whole rear of the car apart from the windshield back, blew a hole in the house it was parked next to, and killed the guy. Acetylene tanks are very dangerous if not handled with care. Never move one without the protective cap screwed on the tank. |

By: MychaelZ 12/6/2011 12:09 PM @ MrAMC1 - Yeah, 'cause the protective cap will hold in any leaking gas... How about this? Use some common sense. Triple-check to make sure the valve is completely shut, and then check it for leaks. (A spray bottle of Formula 409, some other cleaner that will bubble, or even just diluted dish soap will do the trick.) Only transport tanks upright or at minimal angle; NEVER lay a tank on its side, even empty. As with the vast majority of traffic collisions, "accidents" are preventable if you simply use half a brain. |

|
By: nugnt1 12/6/2011 12:52 PM At least the cap will prevent the valve from being accidentally opened if it does hit/get hit with another object. |
|
|
By: MrAMC1 12/6/2011 1:07 PM I meant use the cap on tanks that aren't leaking. Obviously the cap isn't a leak preventer as it has holes in it! The cap will keep the valve from getting turned on (leak) or broken off (leak). |

By: OutskirtsCustoms 12/6/2011 1:51 PM Wow, glad he survived okay. Probably scared the crap out of him. I know it would me. It would still make a great off road rig. |

By: gold94corolla 12/6/2011 2:14 PM wowza, that's amazing. Completely blown apart, but no burns at all. Crazy! |

By: HHOGuy 12/6/2011 4:09 PM It looks like the air bags may have protected him from the blast. http://www.hhoautogas.com |

By: 1971Muscle 12/13/2011 6:15 AM IF... the acetylene tag is true, it was a small amount and not a tank explosion. Acteylene is an unstable molecule and hence has an extremely fast burn rate therefore creates a more violent explosion than most fuels. This, combined with a very low lower flamibility limit, may be what made it possible for a small amount of it to blow the vehicle without the extreme heat associated with other explosions of equal magnitude. That may have saved the driver from extreme burns - but it no doubt didn't save his ear drums from the pressure wave! |

By: PathosBedlam 12/13/2011 6:52 AM I was on patrol at the Hospital one night and I see this green Subaru Forester driving around the round-about with the tail-gate open and all the windows blown out, being followed by a police car. I followed it to A&E. He had apparently tried to kill himself by swallowing a heap of pain pills and opened a bottle of propane and fallen asleep in the car, issues with the wife, but woke up later and tried to light a cigarette, which ignited the gas and blew out the tail-gate and windows, including the front window. He somehow managed to survive the blast, with a fair bit less hair I'll admit, and decided to drive himself into hospital. The car was tough though, all the doors were bulged out, but having the tail-gate break open from the weld, with loop still locked in place on the latch, it released the main part of the pressure, stopping the guy from possibly dying. I gotta say though, the Subaru is a tough car to be blown up and then still be driven to the hospital. It was probably classed as a write-off, but I reckon it was fixable. Just isn't worth fixing, when they are only 7000 second hand. |

By: FbodyMan71 12/13/2011 11:14 AM I am glad he is ok, but I am not sorry that his Toyota is destroyed. At-least it was not a real off-road vehicle like a Jeep. |

By: 79cobra96gt 12/15/2011 2:54 PM michael z the cap is to ensure that the valve doesnt get knowcked of in case the tank falls and yes you are right is not intended for leak control thats why we always chain them up in the shop or in the hand dolly but its true this guy must had left it open and who transports a acetylene bottle inside a suv that is the dumbest idea ever. if you weld you should know the first thing they tell you about handling bottles. |
