Those of us who run 80's tin learned at an early age not to do this. But some car owners don't know how easily a body panel can be oil-canned, some believe their vintage tanks are invincible, some have theories about how keeping their butts only on structural metalwork will keep their ride safe from harm. None seem to be aware of the havock that can be wreaked on paint by posterior denim hardware. Most likely, someone who sits on their car has never done their own bodywork, because once you have, the spectacle of someone putting their full weight on a car will automatically make you cringe. How about you? Do you sit or stand (not lean, but actually with your feet off the ground) on the exterior of your car? Photo via VFAC's ride page.

By: ChAMbER_CUStOMS 10/1/2011 2:17 PM my blazer I will put stuff on it, lean on it, i never sit on the hood just the trunk, why climb when it's a nice height in the back and it's somewhat a beater so i don't care. My AMX on the other hand i never have and never will. Given it needs a resto i will not ruin the hood and when it is fixed i will get another hood just for shows if girls want to pose on it. Why ruin something you love. |

By: callediceman 10/1/2011 4:40 PM no i sit on chairs and couches...... never on my car |
By: uberaudi 10/1/2011 4:54 PM Never! people who sit/lean on my cars get a angry flying cat to the face! |
By: robpurifoy 10/1/2011 5:31 PM Exactly and a big thank you. My step son and I had a knock down drag out verbal exchange out because I said " dude please don't lean on the F*ckin' Corvette". I said it in a nice but someone passionate manner and he just stared at me with this look of disdain as if to say " you can't do nothin' to me at my moms house".. I wanted to drag his azz down to the street by his saggy pants and leave his face in the dirt. But then again I would be divorced right now. Anyone else would have been toast. Nothing burns me more than disrespect for another mans car. |
By: gold94corolla 10/1/2011 6:13 PM Nope, never sit on my cars. |
By: usnrocker 10/1/2011 6:26 PM my c10's hood has a nice ass print on it from me.... my toaster never... why have a thick steel seat and NOT use it? |
By: thrasher86 10/1/2011 7:36 PM my accord has so many dents i dont think anyone would notice a couple extra... plus its was more fun to do a dukes of hazard slide across the hood ... good times good times. |
By: retroman 10/1/2011 10:12 PM Sitting, leaning, or posing with one foot on the front bumper has always seemed like an American past time to me. You see it in the movies all the time. Remember all the episodes of "That '70s Show" where they showed people lounging on the hood of the Vista Cruiser?? I say if the steel is thick enough (they don't make cars with thick skins anymore) and you're not worried about the paint, go ahead, enjoy. There was nothing like it to me than to be able to go to the drive-in theater and sit under the stars on my hood. There's an even better benefit too. The heat from the engine warms your butt on those chilly nights. I've had some good times with my car. One time, my g/f (now my wife) and I went to the top of a mountain on the West Virginia/Virginia state line to watch the sunset. I kid because like most relationships we were in two states at the same time, and in more than one way. lol. But honestly, the deepest conversation I ever had with my wife happened that night on the hood of my car. I must sound like a baby boomer, but I'm not. I'm just a young buck who's every important event in life happens around his car. |

By: cknarf 10/1/2011 10:39 PM White car, cant see scratches. I sit on the bird all the time! Not like the paint is immaculate anyways. |
By: boatdude13 10/2/2011 5:23 AM hahahaha 'dukes of hazard slide'! I used to sit on my roof of my cherokee. I actually would have a few people up there, but then i started to notice that it was dipping in one night and I ordered everyone off of the roof. It is super wavy now. I have roof racks that hide the roof from the sides so the only way you can see it is if you are over 6'1" from the back. When I re-did my headliner i found out that we had bent one of the crossbeams and it was no longer in contact with the roof. The only time that is an issue is on the highway with the windows up because it flexes and it feels like a 30" sub at 1Hz. So now, no more sitting on the roof. |
By: jond91 10/2/2011 4:33 PM I stand/sit on mine plenty for pics, but my roof is 80% glass and I only get on that. |
By: GetTheClicker 10/2/2011 5:37 PM I own a white 98 ford explorer bought used with rust on the rear right q-panel, shitty repaint job back there too, and already scratched up soo Who gives a damn about a 13yr old ford? Now if we were talking a Fresh Delorean, I would go absolutely ape shit. |
By: Exodus_10 10/2/2011 11:56 PM Hell no! Lean with both feet on the ground on a rear quarter or near the door sure, but sit on the hood or the trunk, no way. Sure my 72 Chevelle has all steel body panels but you can still cave those in or just leave scratches. As for my Saturn, plastic body panels although dent resistant as they are don't need to be tested and neither does my carbon fiber hood. You want to sit take a curb or better yet there are these ready made components on cars made for when you don't want to stand, oh yeah they are called seats. |
By: MrAMC1 10/3/2011 5:31 AM I have used the front fender of my Studebaker truck for a ladder a few times while in the garage. Mind you that the fenders and side panels are made out of 16 ga steel, not 22 ga like new cars. Also I didn't stand in the middle of the panel, I put my weight on the edges where it can't bend. Also the truck is in primer as I absolutely would not be walking on it if it was painted. I also would never stand on anything that could get damaged like the roof or hood. |
By: 66Mope 10/3/2011 9:00 AM wouldn't hurt my Mopar or Volvo, but I don't do it |
By: FuryPaul 10/3/2011 12:16 PM Both the Furies need paint and my jeans don't have hardware on the back pockets, so yes, I'll lean or occasionally sit on those. They can take it. But I would never consider putting my whole weight on the newer cars. |
By: hghflyrjd1 10/4/2011 6:53 AM NEVER sit on my AvaDon!never! |
By: lilhavin301 10/4/2011 7:08 AM I did (once or twice) when I had my Vic but not my M45! |
By: waynesgarage 10/4/2011 7:34 AM Hey man take pride in your ride polish and shine but no behinds thats a crime. And to all of you who thinks your ride is a chair Then sit on it it will go to junk somewhere |
By: bald1der 10/4/2011 7:49 AM Don't sit on car, my truck or my Harley. As a matter of fact, don't even put your feet up on my dashboard when you in my ride. I used to do body and fender work, and I know the damage that can be done to the paint. |
By: Tragic_lullaby 10/4/2011 7:52 AM Only once when I was reallllllllly drunk. Otherwise no. |
By: DrKevorkian 10/4/2011 8:23 AM Can't sit on my CRX, but when I'm hanging out with my 2nd gen Camaro, Sitting on the hood and leaning on the windshield is the perfect pose. Sometimes flat black is the perfect finish. |
By: 80-zcamaro 10/4/2011 8:29 AM Common sense would say you don't do this. I don't care what decade your car was built or how thick the metal is. It isn't just about pop can dents it is also about scratches in the paint. My daily driver is even treated with respect and I have to try and get the scratches out of it. |
By: 93Cutloose 10/4/2011 8:31 AM Never sat on any of my nice cars, and I have done too many body jobs where people let their kids sit and jump on roofs. I only ever sit on my work truck it's a beat up 94 ranger with 55000km on it so who cares. |
By: Mustagon 10/4/2011 8:46 AM I'll fold down the tailgate on my truck and sit on that. Nowhere else though. Sheet metal is too flimsy and will dent. |
By: DUBvilleStunner 10/4/2011 9:19 AM It is only ok if I do it..or for the purpose of a photoshoot..otherwise you can't even lean on it. |
By: LN7_NUT 10/4/2011 9:23 AM I stand on my 36 GMC to take photos occasionally, but anyone who's seen my page will see that's not a problem! I'm amazed how often I catch random people leaning or sitting on my cars... and they usually get mad at me when I tell them to GTFO... |
By: Fourx4ever 10/4/2011 9:25 AM Ok I would never plunk my own butt down on any part of my car. However its pretty nice to have 110lbs of blond, blue eyed bikini artfully sprawled across my hood for a picture. Too bad all the new cars are just JUNK tin foil sheet metal that practically warps with a fly splat. I'm really hating modern cars more and more for a wide range of reasons, this is just one of them. Stickin' to the pre-1980s iron. |
By: 1988throwback 10/4/2011 10:58 AM the only people that really do domb shit like that are the one's who do have a nice ride them selve's or do not know better or simply don't give fuck.I drive a clean ass 95 s500 benz and one of my buddeies leanhis his stankin ass against the rear qauter panel.for some reason he love's to lean on my car's and that shit use to boil my blood plus he drives a peice shit mini van so I told him in the nicest way I knew how STOP leaning your stankin ass aganist my car. |
By: Kasperthegreedy 10/4/2011 11:09 AM Sit on my tailgate anywhere else you will be used for target practice. My kids learned a valuable lesson at the hands of a football. |
By: nivrehs 10/4/2011 11:38 AM Everything retroman just said. |
By: Bigtime070516 10/4/2011 11:46 AM yeah cringe factor for sure dont touch, lean, stand, sit or look cross at my car or you will feel the rath!!! at the same time if you are out there runnin the streets puttin all that money into a car instead of saving it, well then kick it slap it scratch it and burn the tires off! you cant do that in jail;)!!!!! i really hate when customers come to my shop and see a nice car and go straight to fingering and thinking they can pop doors and all! dont think so. in short people are either to moneyed up or just dont give a shit about someones hard work or the resale value of their car 1 |
By: Mazda6Dr 10/4/2011 1:01 PM I had sex on the hood of my 74 monte in high school..but I would not be caught dead sitting on the hood of my 6. |
By: SLiCxRIC 10/4/2011 2:52 PM I did body work for nine years, and nothing pisses me of more than some ass hat sitting on their car. First one to sit on my car will be going home with three shoes......two on the feet and one in their ass!!!!!!!!!!! |
By: RwdBooter 10/4/2011 3:22 PM I sit on mine all the time, but I drive a 2000 sunfire with hail damage. I'm not going to give a shit about a few scratches. |
By: Comrick317 10/4/2011 3:26 PM I sit on the park benches (bumpers) of my 1976 Mercury Comet with my feet off the ground. But then again there massive and thick as sin. You would have to weigh 700 lbs to even move them. Most people hate those bumpers. I hate 'em too but in an accident i sure the Hell feel safe. |
By: DJEZ016 10/4/2011 4:00 PM i would on certain parts of the car if you mess it up just be prepared to fix it |
By: lawtontaco 10/4/2011 7:10 PM I sit on my truck all the time. The tailgate makes a good chair. |
By: NJZGuy 10/4/2011 7:28 PM Cars are meant to sit in--not on. |
By: cadwin 10/4/2011 7:48 PM CRINGE , shudder , shake , Gulp ! ! 8-{ Besides ..... I own a 2002 Volvo C70 Cabriolet ... Hhhhmmm come to think of it...... i would go THRU The Roof . Bwahahahahahahaha |
By: theduck13b 10/4/2011 8:03 PM 250 lbs on Kevlar panels......hell no I do not sit on my car |
By: mike_az95sc2 10/4/2011 9:22 PM Hell no, my whole car is glass and plastic. Only hot chix sit on my car. I just can't tell them no. I did once, she gave me a :( that was the last time I said that. |
By: RogueCat 10/4/2011 10:08 PM HELL NO, NOR WILL I LEAN ON SAID VECHILE. |
By: tigre1981 10/4/2011 10:14 PM After watching my auntie sit on my other auntie's Escort and dented the crap out of the hood I never sat on another car and I would NEVER let some sit on my. |
By: Ghost121086 10/4/2011 10:19 PM I have a 76 Monte Carlo and I am currently finishing up the body work and preping for paint, and from experience I will never sit on another car because I had to smooth out to many ass prints in my hood. Plus it goes to show u that old cars are not invincible to the all mighty powers of the ass, lol. |
By: iownahearse 10/4/2011 10:42 PM i sit on the hood of my hearse it don't hurt it. |
By: JayJayRYDER 10/4/2011 11:13 PM I wouldn't even lean on my car. I really hate that when you go to an outside party, you have your car parked with every other car in front of the house, people will actually lean sit and sometimes if party is getting rowdy, they would stand on your car doing crazy shit. |
By: Jacie 10/5/2011 3:05 AM Screw that! That can do so much to the paint. an even creat the littlest dent! |
By: tvrust 10/5/2011 7:43 AM Don't even think about it! A very large ( and I use the term Loosely!!)woman sat on the bonnet of my Ferrari because "I had to sit down!" Although I was able to push the dent out It cost $1,000.00 to have the 1 1/2 crack in the aluminum hood stiched plus trying to match Ferrari Rosa corsa paint color is not easy. Next time "You toucha my car, I breaka your face!" |
By: moparmadness1120 10/5/2011 1:01 PM i dont sit on my car , very seldom do i lean on it |
By: mhorton 10/5/2011 7:28 PM DrKevorkian, I like that you own both a CRX and a Camaro. To answer the question, no I would never sit on my cars. I might have leaned on it filling the tank but not if I had jeans with rivets, and now that I've just gotten my CRX painted, I won't do that either. |
By: grinchious 10/5/2011 9:58 PM i do actually. i have a fully custom painted car and i still do it. but i have an old ass 84 town car with a huge steel hood. my girl loves it when we lay on the hood at the park at like 2am after cruising and look at the stars and stuff. but im not one of those people who lean all over some one else's car. i paid for mine and i do all the work. if i want to be a normal teen and lay all over it i will, but you better mot lol :) |
By: dixie_boysles 10/6/2011 11:14 AM id beat someone's ass if they sat on my truck somewhere other than the tailgate, bed, or in the cab... |
By: chev_4_life 10/6/2011 11:41 AM Only place people are allowed to sit in my truck are bed tailgate or cab, if they even so much lean or sit on any other part i get all pissy, i baby the thiung :P. But on the other hand with my 98 grand cherokee, i could care less if people sat on my hood stood on the roof window or anything else, it was my bush vehicle, it took abuse i had hit trees and stumps in the thing doing like 30 km, tipped it twice, thing was beat to hell, thats the only vehicle i let people stand sit lean on. |
By: JRhapsody 10/7/2011 7:44 PM I hate it when people lean or sit on any of my cars. It doesn't matter how old it is or what kinda paint it has. I hate it when people sat stuff on it. I've had people sit on the rear bumper of my pick up and Bronco, that's okay. Tailgate that's okay. No one is to touch my mustang or sit on it. Especially the trunk with its composite spoiler, I swear if somebody cracks or breaks that thing cause they wanna lean or slide their fat ass on it is going to raise hell. I find it disrespectful on some instances. |
By: Jimbosaurus 10/13/2011 8:29 PM before i had my 89 corolla repainted, i always do. i dont weigh much and the sheetmetal on these cars are thick. but nowadays i do not. cant scratch the paint. :) |
By: StreetDemonzCC 10/15/2011 7:14 PM Not stand on, but I do put my tools on them sometimes... |
By: sidepipes2003 1/7/2012 7:33 AM I have been known to lean against the corner of the car But ill be danmed if i sit on it, unless it was My honda that car had enough dents in it when i got it |
