Pontiac G8 Back As Chevy Caprice Cop Car
Posted On: 6/6/2011 8:21AM

A while back, I posted an article stating that the Pontiac G8 will be back as a Chevy. But no one knew what it would be called. Turns out it will be the next generation Caprice cop car. No word on whether we'll get a civilian version. Read the full article at Motor Trend. Is this a good move by GM?

I like it, would be better than the FWD Impala. I do hope they will make a civilian version, I wouldn't mind having a V8 version of it.

I really liked the G8 when it came out, so I'm glad they're bringing it back. I just hope they have a civilian version as well.

krush454 - If you loved your G8 with all your genitals, I sure as hell don't want to see what's inside the exhaust tips.

I've always been a big fan of the Pontiac G8 because it was GMs last real car (V8 - RWD) and I've always been an advocate for the Dodge Charger Police Cruiser, and with the G8 coming back as the new Caprice Cop Car it will be interesting to see which car departments prefer (although without bias I do believe the new Dodge Charger is a better car because of the recent update to the whole car)

DodgeAdict - The G8 was GM's last real car until the Camaro. If I remember right the new Camaro is even on the same platform as the G8. Hell the G8 GXP even had the 6.2 Liter LS3 which is in the Camaro SS. So being that they're the same platform (if I remember right) and have the same engine (Camaro SS and G8 GXP at least) they're virtually the same car just with different body panels.

It might be a good move for them, but I personally hate when they take one of the few badass cars that American companies still make and make it a cop car. Idk about you guys, but I'm 19 and get into my share of legal shenanigans, so when I see a a charger now or and crown vic or impala that doesn't look too tricked out, I'm immediately a little freaked out that its an unmarked cop. From the stand point of a car guy, cop cars a cool, but thats just about until I see the blue lights. I apologize, my rambling may seem pretty stupid to some of you, but hopefully some will understand what I'm talking about.

slanuk - I was like that when I was your age. Mainly because I was the one doing burnouts, donuts in parking lots, revving up, wanting to race people a little, everything like that. But when I got my CDL class A when I was 20 I got more respect for the road and that's when I stopped. I had one immature episode when I was maybe 22 or 23 and got a ticket, since then I haven't done anything stupid and what sucks is that was the 1st and only time I did something stupid after getting my CDL and my luck I got caught. I never got mad at a cop since they were just doing their job. Maybe you'll need something to happen to be a rude awakening, like getting 1 too many tickets or an accident. I was lucky enough to stop before a wreck happened even though I would avoid wrecks all the time (both would and wouldn't have been caused by me).

it would be the stupidest move they have made so far if they didnt bring it back, or if the didnt bring it back in its former glory. the G8 would have been the car to save pontiac, if it had a little more time. it was easily one of the best cars GM has ever produced, and in my opinion, probably the best all around car. it was fast, practical, sporty, and relatively luxurious... all at a good price. if the fail to bring it back, or bring it back in a dumbed down form, they will just screw themselves.

This news has been out about 9 months already. Chevy has a website for police vehicles. I saw this 6 months ago. At the time they were saying that there is no word of a civilian version yet.

How is the G8 Pontiac's last real car? Has everyone forgotten the GTO that quickly? The GTO, the first muscle car to set the 400 HP N/A benchmark that both Chevy and Ford are just catching up to. Don't get me wrong the G8 is one hell of a nice car but it seems the GTO Isn't getting the respect it deserves IMO. If they hadn't ended the Pontiac legacy where would the GOAT be in 2012?

Neckbonekat - Look up the years the 2 cars were in production. GTO's last year was 2006 and the G8's last year was 2009. Also at the time the only Chevy V8 car I can remember was the FWD Impala SS so that was made to just be an upgraded version, not 100% performance. Pontiac is/was a GM so GM did hit the benchmark, they just didn't have a Chevy to put the power in since the Impala SS was FWD and more of a family 4 door sedan than a modern muscle car. I honestly didn't like or hate the newer GTO, and I wasn't alone since the newer GTO only lasted 3 years. That way they could focus on making the new Camaro.

albania_fier - Like with the GM trucks, some people like just the Chevy front end, some like just the GMC and some like both. Personally I like this Chevy grille better than the G8. That wouldn't be a simple grille change either since part of the actual body splits the grille in half on the G8.

Ive heard through a good source that the Caprice verison will only be for fleet use only. A civilian version will be called the Chevelle. (not sure if a two door version will be avalible for civilian use)

I work for a chevrolet dealership and a few months ago we had one on display. From what we understand its only going to be available for cops.. But yet its one of the most sold luxury cars over seas!! What kind of bull sh*t is that?

@SouthernGuy Believe me, I have respect for cops and what they put themselves through for the good of the community, I just hate stupid laws and dick cops. I'm a pretty safe driver but my wake up call came about a month ago because I got stopped and they found some Mary Jane on me. Its my fault for carrying it, and driving with a headlight out, but it being illegal is so remarkably stupid and me losing my license because I had some is even worse. On top of that, the cop who arrested me was a huge douche, treating me like I'm going actually attempt anything dumb in that situation. Not only did he get my car impounded, didn't let me call a friend to come get it(I was about 1.5 miles from my place), he was also such a racist dick, he at called me "boy" many times. I love the south, its my home, and I don't think I deserve to be treated like shit by some hick cop because of my skin color regardless of my "crime." This has been my "rude awakening" and I literally tense up when I see cops on the road. Also, I'm going to lose my license in about two weeks. I don't think I deserve this.

I am a firm Crown Vic fan, but the upcoming Taurus based Interceptor doesn't do it for me, dispite the fact that there are huge differences between the civilian and "cop" versions. I think Ford made a big mistake getting away from RWD. I dislike the Dodge, so this new Caprice may be the first GM I will actually like since the 1980s...

Caprice is a fitting name. It was already Chevy anyways, it just had a Pontiac badge.

GM and Chevrolet can eat a D**k for this bull. What GM needs to do is bring back Pontiac, the Re-Birth. Not all models but the top 4 IMO. G8, GTO, Solstice and the Bonneville. Then (maby) we could get the G8 truck down the road....

Having driven all three, I will take the Charger, look for brake trouble with the Caprice, and a little more body roll than it needs,( hopefully this will be corrected) The Taurus has not reached its full potential as yet, but I would hate to replace those turbos very often, The CHP run a charger without the rev limiter and reached a speed of 165 mph, they can be ordered with a 129mph, a 146 mph, Bro ward County has some Challengers with the 180mph chip, I guess they have there reasons. The v/6 Charger now has the pcm module corrected and according to my friend at The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, except of accleration and top speed the v/6 handles very very well. I agree. The North Carolina Highway Patrol fleet manger said the Charger's transmission has unbelievable low maintenance. With all of the plus from the real experts. I will stick with the Charger

I as well as some fleet managers do not like the idea of putting the Pontiac workers in America on the welfare lines, and importing the same car, putting a bow tie on it calling the vehicle a Caprice, I hope the workers in Australia are happy that General Motors chose them over American workers, I am not.
