I Think My Brakes Are Making Some Noise?

I can't tell you how many times I've had customers come in and ask me to take a look at their brakes because they'd heard their brakes squeaking for a while, but the noise had eventually stopped so they were not that worried. After lifting the car and removing the wheels, the issue becomes obvious. That little metal prong that brake pads have, designed to make a squealing sound when your brake pads are nearing replacement, has warn completely off and the brakes pads have gone metal to metal, grinding away at the rotor. The picture below is the worst example of this that I have ever encountered at my shop.

I changed my friend's brake pads several weeks ago, and on the right side, the outer pad was completely gone. The nice little metal plate that came on the back of the pad was sticking, mangled, out between the arms of the caliper. That was bad. This, however, makes me want to go check my own brakes right now.

LOL thought my moms car was bad. The calpiers stick on in her ford focus so at night while your driving you look like a f1 car while you braking. Drive for a while and you can see the glow from them at night. But this takes the cake.

Same goes with wiper blades, oil changes, alignments, etc... I know people who run wipers until they have metal on glass contact. By that time the windshield starts to get scratched. What people don't realize is what they don't fix now will cost them a whole lot more to fix later. I guess not all of us are as in love with our cars.

CarDomain members, well most CarDomain members have to remind themselves that there is a general public out there that doesn't know, nor has an interest in knowing how to treat their cars. If they feel inconvenienced by a maintenance issue, many will simply ignore it until it interferes substantially with their ability to get from place to place. As if that isn't scary or outrageous enough... many of them vote and have comparable knowledge of politics, economics and science. Enjoy civilization while it lasts.

Not even close to the worst I have seen. The worst I have seen was wearing the rotor completely free of the hub. Granted, that was a rear non-vented disc, but I have also seen a vented disc that was worn through the inside surface and all the way through the vent part. How do you not notice for that last 8 months that your car doesn't stop worth a crap and it sounds funny?

Shaved disc. Cutting edge technology.
