Wheel Selection: How Do You Decide?

I'm currently building a 1978 Chevy Nova. The build will be totally custom, and I'm not necessarily going for a nostalgic look. Still, it's hard to decide on the perfect wheel for your project when there are so many options out there. What are your thoughts?

For 60s cars like to stay somewhat period correct if possible, though a bit bigger and wider. Still thinking of going Keystone Klassics on the Mopar. http://www.newstalgiawheel.com/wheel_detail.asp?subcat3=1071102

I have some real basic (but wide) aluminum wheels on my 70 Formula 400.....gives it a pro touring look, but the aluminum let's everyone know I mean business!

There are certain wheel combos that look good and should be a standard combo (ie. 60's mustangs or Nova II's with 17 inch Torq Thrust 2's). But if there isn't a common 'combo' I like to go with a unique wheel that no-one has. When I was looking at rims for the Torino, I went to one shop that suggested a certain wheel and noticed that lots of people had that wheel on every type of vehicle (boss wheels, 304). So, I went to a different shop and got some other options that came to the same price. I'm way happier that I shopped around because no one in town has the same wheels as me. (haven't posted those pics on my pfocile yet though...)

Black steelies and white-letter tires on everything.

if you get big rims, try to get full face so your breaks dont look small

Two ways about it really, the secure way is to put something on there that you've seen on the same style cars that looks good, or you can go and try something way different that hardly anyone ever does if at all. Think of the Mustang on tokyo drift with GT-7's for example.

Me personally i like the classic 5 spoke pattern hard to go wrong with that. Also something easy to clean you dont want your 1-2 grand set of rims and tires all clouded up and covered with brake dust because its to hard to clean. Also your choice of tire too also effects the overall appearance. Dont get 2 grand worth of rims then put cheap cooper tires on it.

simple. if it looks stupid, don't do it. If it looks good, you're getting warmer.

I want wheels that add depth, so buying rims that have a deep lip and a wide tire always make the car look wider too.
