Toyota Unintended Acceleration Causes Firey NASCAR Wreck

The most hellacious wreck at Martinsville this weekend clearly goes to Martin Truex Jr. It started after the throttle stuck open on Truex's Toyota Camry, causing the car to take off into a corner, collecting fellow Toyota driver Kasey Kahne, momentarily enveloping both cars in a fireball of spraying fuel, and then finally driving violently into the wall at wide-open throttle. Who says there's no relation between NASCAR and production vehicles? Maybe someone should tell the Toyota drivers to adjust their floormats. Thankfully, both Truex and Kahne walked away completely unscathed. Video after the jump, watch for the cool ultra-slow-mo sequence at around 2:30.

IT wasn't actually a floormat issue.

What a piece of crap article. Do you really think that Toyota made the throttle assembly? Get a life.

People stopped driving toyotas on American streets because they had a tendency to get a stuck throttle and put the driver and drivers around him in grave danger... now it’s happened at NASCAR!! toyota GO HOME to your radiated wasteland XP -- MOPAR 4 LIFE

Stephen2 - Have an ounce of sense of humor, of course Jen and everybody knows Toyota doesn't make the throttle. Hell Toyota doesn't make their throttle in case you didn't know manufacturers just design and assemble, or did you think they actually make their own parts? Maybe you're the one that needs to get a life, get a sense of humor and get some facts before you leave a tight assed comment, have a nice day.

Hilarious. And totally agree with SouthernGuy. Everybody knows there's no real relation to the production cars, but the irony is what's funny. I'm glad Jen made the floor mat comment because I would've. Also, can somebody tell me why, when the throttle hangs, they don't just clutch it? Motor would pop, but wouldn't that beat driving head-on into the wall at full throttle? Enlighten me.

Just another proof that Toyota should stick to making forklifts. IF even that...

protodelorean - It wouldn't have helped, it happened to fast it wouldn't have mattered. Martin Truex Jr. (#56 NAPA car) said that him hitting Kahne (#4 Red Bull car) slowed him down a lot and he still hit the wall hard so imagine if there was no car to the outside of him. It happened so fast he wouldn't have had the time to push the clutch in, let alone it actually help. Also they have an emergency cut off switch in the car, I assume it just cuts the ignition and nobody has time on a little 1/2 mile short track to even be able to click the switch (most likely a big toggle). I think it's only been one driver that did and that was Jeff Gordon, that was just once, so only once out of all of the cars wrecked at Martinsville ever since they've raced there.

I like how every single Nascar bursts into flames during crashes.
