Do You Let Others Drive Your Ride?

For some, letting others drive your car is like letting them date your girlfriend or wife, which means that the odds of it happening are slim to none. Yet for others, it’s really not that big of a deal and in fact, you actually get some enjoyment out of it. Personally, I think that cars are meant to be enjoyed and experienced by all those around them, but that’s if, and only if, you prove yourself to be worthy of the keys. As mentioned, a man’s car is probably third in line to only his wife and kids as far as his affections go. That means that if you are lucky enough to get behind the wheel you must treat it with respect. In the past I’ve let people drive my cars and in fact was quite free with the keys. However, there have been times where people have either damaged or abused my rides which has now made me much more cautious about who sits in the drivers seat. In the end I think it comes down to trust.

If the other person has proven themselves either as a friend, or a friend of a friend that they trust, then you shouldn’t have any problems. Just make sure that they know the consequences if something goes wrong. Like the old adage says… you break it, you bought it. Via RideLust

I'm usually pretty open to letting friends drive my car, as long as they can drive manual anyway. Its just kind of fun letting someone else have fun with something you built up.

When i had my TL my favorite part of a night out was having someone else drive and let me chill in the back with some party favors and jam some zeppelin or wayne. good times. My truck.... eh. As long as you havent blown up your own car you can drive it, but i have never and will never let anyone drive any of my vehicles without me being there. I trust but not that much.

It really depends on the car I think. Sports cars or modified performance oriented cars, I'd think (at least in my case) would be reserved for the driver who built it. I always find it hard to explain all the the things to look out for when driving it (the do or don't do list per the mods). I'll find myself second guess letting someone else use it. People have a tendency not to pay as much attention to safety when dealing with someone else's sports car. When its yours, you know what it's worth so you do have some restraint. Also doesn't help that my friends don't know how to drive manual XP Other types of cars I don't mind.

FUCK NO. My car is a deathtrap, no power brakes lol. I play soccer, so My legs are beefy enough. I can't trust anyone else, they'd rear-end people.

Back in high school I knew a kid who drove his dad's '70 Mustang to school quite regularly. One day that kid let another one of his buddies drive the car. Well something went wrong and the Mustang ended up going shiny side down several times. Kid's dad wasn't too happy and no more Mustang. I very very very rarely have let anyone drive my cars or trucks unless they are my late model junkers/beaters. The old stuff I don't let anyone drive.

depends on who and where, and only if im there. sometimes i enjoy being a passenger in my own car. it lets me experience another aspect of it. and its only if they understand how much it means to me (vs how much THEY mean to me lol). one slip up, and they are out.

It really depends on the person and how they treat vehicles. For example my girlfriend has an 08 cobalt and its pretty beat up in some areas..she be scraping the rims and stuff so when she wants to get behind the wheel of my ride i get nervous. My friend has a 02 wrx and id probably be more comfortable letting him drive my truck since he takes real good care of his ride. So basically ill let some1 drive my ride depending on how they treat theirs.

I drive a stick, so it's almost a moot point. But it is a 22 year old car with 228k on the clock, so I don't get too worried about it. However, I do plan to get something else at some point, something nicer and newer. I hope to take good enough care of it that people know they shouldn't ask to borrow it unless they really need it, in which case I'll probably still let them. Friendships are more important than cars.

with me I dont let anyone drive my classics but a very select few friends that know that if they damage them there will be hell to pay with my 66 Econoline it has manual steering and brakes and a clutch that will break your leg so no one wants to drive her so I don't have a problem there. My 1971 GMC Surburban its not ready for the road yet so no one drives that yet but I will PROBABLY let a select few of my friends drive it after it's on the road. As for my late model cars like my 91 astro it's the "whore" of my fleet everyone drives it. It has almost 300k on it's clock on it's 4th set of seats (currently from a late 90s caravan) and 2nd slider door 2nd column (from a gmc safari) and running 235/75/15s (came with 205/75s) on rallys that i got from a wrecking yard and is still running strong.

I have let friends drive my cars in the past, only the good ones who have had or have nice cars of their own. THey will have a better appreciation of ones car if they have one of their own. As a typical rule tho, nobody but me drives my nice cars.

My newer cars, yes, if they are a good driver. My old Mopar, only if they are a) good driver and b) have experience driving old junk.

ive put to much time in effort into making my car what it is, its garage kept and well maintained. That being said it takes alot to gain my trust on the issue of driving my car. The moms has driven it mostly cause i trust her an she trusts me with her car, but thats about it. not even my girlfriends have driven it....

I was going to call a Violation on the picture of the camaro with the story that your wrote. The Camaro looks like alot of the Camaro that was hit on the 2010 Hot Rod Power Tour and the driver of the camaro was killed (http://www.reikiflow.net/?p=981) but the camaro on the tour had a white stripe, dont see it on that picture

I have 3 friends that i let drive my vehicles. Not that i have anything nice, but i trust them. One of them learned to drive stick in my cavalier, anytime i needed a pickup i'd take his truck for the day and he'd take my car to work. They treat my vehicles with respect as the same i treat theirs with respect.

Only 1 of my friends can drive the car because he actually respects the car, he asks if he can eat, smoke, etc... From my family side only my sister and that's it.

Back in high school I drove a 1992 Mazda MPV, I paid around $800 for it and it ran like it was brand new. To be honest I wouldnt have wanted any other first car (I'm a firm believer in the "your first car shouldnt be a nice car, because of inexperience" saying). So to make a long story short about a month after owning it my dad was going on a trip and he wanted my car while I was in school to do some running around. I didn't think anything of it but I soon came to realize my phone was ringing about an hour into class and it was my dad explaining that he had just been in a accident..... He slid through a stop sign on ice and got t-boned at around 80KM/H. There was a whole in the side of my van about a half inch away from the rear wheel and my driver door was completly ruined and no longer functioned. Surprisingly the van still drove and I continued to drive it like that for another year, now that I bought by 2003 Lincoln LS V8 I wouldnt let anyone drive it even if they paid me!!!

My daily driver - sure. My Fury or my motorcycle, not a chance. (although a mechanic drove it around the street next to his garage and then into a bay. It was kinda cool to see it from that perspective)

I worry enough when my Wife gets behind the wheel. My oldest daughter will get her own car in a year or so... but nobody else drives our cars.

I really feel things out with the people. My Dakota or Neon are pretty much fair game. With my 40 Ford it has more engine than it does brakes so I would only let a handful of people drive it around town but out of town I think I would let many of my friends drive it because theres more time to anticipate things. It always feels like your car pulls harder when someone else is driving it for some reason.

I only let my mechanic drive my Monte. He's a chevy guy which means he appreciates cars more than others. But other than him, NO ONE drives my cars. Not even my parents. Trust No One.

Someone said a car is like a wife-very true, you don't mess with either one. Your idiot friends can drive their own cars and get their own women. Have some self preservation people, peer pressure is out these days.

The only times I let someone drive my car was my dad (cant tell the person who taught you about cars no) and if I was drunk. This was in my 76 trans am, no power steering with a strong 455 and stock brakes.

No one drives my car other than me. There are few people I trust to drive my baby, parents and the shops that I trust. I'm about to start riding with whoever test drives my car for whatever I bring the car to the shop for.
