Mods Saved My Life

Well, not my life. This guy's life. IWSTI.com member Aarvark was driving his modded 2007 STi down an Oregon road in a windstorm when trees started falling accross the road and then onto his car. From his post:

My faithful STi, with its brand new stage-two modification pulled us out from under a seven foot diameter tree. Its roof had stopped 5 inch branches from beheading us. Its Brembo brakes had kept us out from under the first tree. Its short shifter made getting into gear a fraction of a second faster. Its stage-two preformed the day before gave us the acceleration to get the roof of the car out from under the trunk of the tree while it was falling. The trunk of the tree fell less than two inches behind the rear seat where Heather was sitting. If any of these circumstances had been changed we all would have been dead.

Scary stuff! But did mods save his life? Or was it luck? The burly Subie b-pillars helped, too. More pics after the jump, and you can read the full story at IWSTI.com.

A little bit of both. It's always nice to have an agile car, just in case you gotta move quick. If that were my cutlass, I'd have been a pancake.

I agree with all three above posts, especaily *If that were my Cutlass, I'd have been a pancake* - I drive an Oldsmobile Delta 88 and its a SLUG with no cornering ablilty.. atleast I have acres of hood, trunk, and backseat for it to hit instead of me!

I think mods my friend was t-boned but with the added accleration in his honda he was able to speed up faster and to only be hit in the right side of the trunk in sted of the drivers door saved his life i think

Am I the only one who is not impressed with Imprezas? Sports car? 4100 pounds? That thing weighs as much as a Challenger!

Come on. All Luck and response time. Take the credit as a driver, not a customizer.

@NickHolla Imprezas do not weigh 4100lbs. I don't know where you got your info from but a 2007 STi Sedan weighs ~3300lbs.

I say a bit of both. Initially, it's all about the driver; quick response and quick reaction. Team that with good performance and a zippy car, helps a lot. A roll cage would work too XP

It's simple... if he saw the tree falling and acted accordingly - and the enhanced performance of the car was a factor then yes, the mods definitely did save lives. Performance can increase safety, just think of those 60 foot long on ramps on the Cross Island Parkway in New York. Want to have a ride that'll do 0-60 in... 60? I think not.

First question is the obvious one, why were you out when the weather was so bad? Second, yeah the mods. did help but, you as a good driver reacted the situation approprately. Third, I agree what Abania_fier said "a roll bar would help" tremendously.
