This test by Edmunds Inside Line is kind of fun but will also seem pretty obvious if not downright silly to anyone who owns and works on 60s Mopars. Yeah, it's cool to keep them original, but if you're gonna take it to the track and put it up against a new car, maybe allow for a few simple bolt ons? Or at least ditch the 70 series tires? My Satellite had 70 series tires when I first got it and just switching to 60s made a huge difference. And check out what about $3,500 worth of bolt-ons did for this '67 Coronet.
Here's what I'd like to see: take a "driver" quality $20,000 Charger off eBay, add another $10,000 to help it stop and go around corners, and then put it up against the new R/T. Now that might be interesting.... Video after the jump!

By: SouthernGuy8503 3/14/2011 1:45 PM No doubt in my mind, you can't substitute the 69 General Lee with the new Charger. I'd take a classic muscle car over any modern muscle car. I don't care for all the little comforts that some people seem to not live without. |

By: AllChevrolet 3/14/2011 2:51 PM I would take the General anyday |

By: albania_fier 3/14/2011 3:27 PM obviously the new one will preform better but the 69 charger is more than just a car its an icon and id love to have one |

By: 74Furyous 3/14/2011 4:33 PM Don't care. 69 hands down! |

By: wld_wst 3/14/2011 5:57 PM Yup, 69 all day!! |

By: ___nes___ 3/14/2011 6:34 PM The numbers on the new R/T are nice and all but the car does not demand the attention that the General does. The General involves you into driving while all new car let you drive them. The General FTW! |

By: usnrocker 3/14/2011 6:59 PM they are both nice but really the classic will always win when it comes to sheer awesomeness.... |

By: GTwildfire 3/14/2011 7:37 PM It's ridiculous to compare a car made in 1970 with one made in 40 years later. Take any model made back then and compare it to its new successor, if one exists. The result will be the same every time. What a stupid exhibition. |

By: salvador626 3/14/2011 8:35 PM i like the front on the ne car in looks good but still a 4 door so the genaral is the one for me :) |

By: ILLUDE-U 3/15/2011 4:58 AM Well, I do feel like the comparison is sensless... the challenger would have been a better comparison.... and it would probably whipped the ole lee even more...... The new muscle cars whip butt... I'm sorry but any new muscle car, can beat its orginal... look at the braking tests. the old charger had freaking drum brakes....anybody who wants that is just stupid as heck..... and don't live in reality... ONCE again General LEE is defeated..... |

By: MrAMC1 3/15/2011 5:02 AM That new Charger might out perform the original, but no car can jump a creek or barn like the General Lee! |

By: MoparRob07 3/15/2011 7:14 AM The new chargers are a blast to drive, but Dodge still needs to work on the classic cues from the original Chargers. I love both my 70 and my 07 Chargers! |

By: DodgeAdict 3/15/2011 12:06 PM Of coarse a modern Charger will do better than a classic in every test (maybe except how it looks, sounds XP ) but if you think about it in forty years, forty whole years, thats really not that much improvement, the 69 Charger really was a beast back in its day, completely untouchable by other muscle cars ('sept for other Mopars XP ) and now adays its still a seriously fast/quick/cool car by anyones standards, if the classis Charger had the 426 ci Big Block HEMI with a four speed I think it could give the modern Charger a run for its gas money (which would be a more fair comparison because the modern Charger has a HEMI) |

By: RockShox 3/15/2011 5:07 PM The old timer sure did set a record and history. I hope the one with new technology sets even a higher record and creates a better history. |

By: M45lover 3/15/2011 9:53 PM This isn't even close. Everyone in their right mind would take the 69' over the new Chargers anyday. |

By: ldecharmoy 3/20/2011 9:53 PM lol not that far apart, that's funny |

By: SuperSilvi 3/26/2011 7:43 PM I dont think that this is thought out compairson. If they wanted to really do it right they should have put into consideration that luke and bo would have done some moddifing over the years. Heads, cam, intake, exhaust, sway bars, ladder bars big brake kit etc... Then lets see who wins. |
