I never thought I’d be doing this, but yesterday I found myself trying to hyper-mileage my 2006 Dodge Magnum SRT8. There I was in a 425 hp, 170 mph hot rod wagon trying to shift before the tachometer reached 2500 rpm. It’s ridiculous I know, but after paying just over $60.00 for a premium tank of fuel just a few minutes earlier, my thought was that I wanted it to last. At the station by my house premium fuel was $4.01 per gallon, and I’ll be honest, it’s getting to the point where it’s starting to hurt. I’m also finding myself doing things that I’ve never done before. For instance, I just purchased new tires for my Maggie, but instead of going with a full-on max performance summer tire with a low tread rating, I instead opted for a max-performance all season, with a treadwear rating of 540AA or 50,000 miles. First off there’s less rolling resistance and secondly, they won’t be bologna skins after 15,000 miles. Continue reading at RideLust

By: Mbeezy3405 3/10/2011 1:55 PM Filled up Sunday for a little over $85, ive got less than a quarter tank now :( As long as the "day of rage" in the mideast dosent cause damage to pipelines tomorrow or the 20th then we should see oil prices level back off. they tend to always jump around memorial weekend anyways so im sure we'll be hanging around these prices for the near future. If OPEC wasnt a monopoly and we could drill off our own shores then we wouldnt be seeing this, but we need to get off of oil anyways its gonna run out in the next 10- 15 years we will hit the max output and then its gonna be worth more than gold. |

By: MrAMC1 3/10/2011 2:12 PM I try to be sensitive with my mileage too. I drive a beast of an E250 extended Ford van all winter at about 12 mpg so that is starting to hurt. Luckily spring is right around the corner and I can break out my hot rods. My 1929 Ford Model A truck gets 20 mpg if I don't hammer on the 283 all the time. My 1946 Studebaker truck gets about 15-17 mpg with a clapped out AMC 258. My 1977 F250 460 Ford only gets about 10 if I'm lucky, but a new timing chain, exhaust and new Holley might boost that up a little. I'll tell you what I am not going to do is buy a new car. Just for kicks I priced out a vehicle that I would buy for mileage minded transportation, but still fill my needs. I came to the conclusion that a Ford Transit Connect would be the best choice. It's 2.0L Focus engine gets 21-26 mpg and it cost $22K. At Ford.com a new Transit Connect would set me back $402/mo for 60 months if I put about $500 down. I could cut my $300/mo fuel bill from the big van down to about $150/mo by doubling my mileage. So in comparison (not counting insurance and 8% tax) my old junk big van costs $300/mo to run period. The Transit Connect would cost $150/mo plus the $402. So even though I increased my mileage by 100% I would be paying an extra $250/mo for 5 years on that new car. What I am going to do is what you described above. Tuning and tweaking my current fleet. I can't really help my big van, but my hot rods I am always fiddling with. I also have in the works a 1931 Ford Model A sport coupe that will be powered by a Mustang 2.3L and T5 tranny. I think that car should knock down 22-27 mpg all day long putting me in the Transit Connect range. And I can build the car for less than $6000. That's one year payment on the Transit Connect. So bottom line, can't help my winter fuel usage, but will definitely work on my 8 months of car season rides and build a new car that is cool and gets good mileage and be happy that gas isn't $5-$7 a gal like it is in a lot of other countries. |

By: chewzer 3/10/2011 3:34 PM I have to fill up tonight from almost empty, I fear I may have to try a lower grade. I've been doing 35mph in 5th gear everywhere. |

By: Bick66 3/10/2011 3:34 PM My 'Vette can get over 30mpg on the highway if I try. I must say, I'll just deal with being more broke before I let gas pricing change how I enjoy my toys. |

By: Idefix 3/10/2011 7:53 PM ^^ Exactly! I'm on the other side of the scale too, maybe it's my way of seeing things. I drive exactly like I did years ago, prices be damned. The way I figure it, I'm not enjoying the car if I'm constantly looking at my gas needle. Bought the car as a fun car and by trying to be gas-conscious, I kill the fun-part of the car making it moot. If I were to do that I may as well have bought an eco-friendly box. When I can't pay for the gas in the car, that'll be another story but as long as I can manage to buy gas to have some moments of utter joy, I'll drive it the way it was intended to XP |

By: GTwildfire 3/10/2011 8:03 PM Old habits seem to never die with me. Painful or not, I drive same as always... described by others as a "white knuckle experience" and "when he's not accelerating, he's braking"... anyway I cut corners elsewhere. Now make my cigarettes for 8 bucks a carton. Saves me over 3 grand a year, a lot more than hypermiling would... |

By: cknarf 3/11/2011 10:23 AM I say we capture the CEOs of all the major oil companies, beat their fat rich asses, and get those prices lowered. They can afford to drop the price and make profit. They know we're just gonna keep paying, so they'll just keep fucking us 'til something happens. |

By: Mbeezy3405 3/11/2011 11:03 AM Oil went below $100 this morning. Thats good news for us all. |

By: GTwildfire 3/11/2011 5:30 PM Oil dropped below but settled above $100. The disaster in Japan meant those freaking genius Oil Speculators figured Japan would consume less oil on the heels of the disruption. Don't assume any drop in the price of oil will stay, however. They will probably be consuming oil, possibly even more oil in the coming weeks because two of their nuclear power plants went offline, were damaged from the quake. They will likely be generating power using... you guessed it. -until the plants are operational again. |

By: SuperSilvi 3/26/2011 8:07 PM I pay 75 bucks a tank ,every two weeks, with 91 octane thanks to a 5.7L 350 V8. Then i started thinking that i havent done a proper tune up in a while. So i changed spark plugs wires cap and rotor cleaned the throttle body ran stp fuel cleaner changed my fuel pump and fuel filter and kept my heavy foot and its been about two and a half weeks and i havent been in for fuel. In short make your engine mor effecient and you make less trips while still having fun. |
