With fuel prices in New York state constantly rising, I’m beginning to wonder if there is anything I can do to avoid filling up my cars. We’re rapidly approaching $4 per gallon and if this happens a lot of people are going to be hit hard in the wallet. It’s something that we all remember going through not that long ago and I can guarantee that we don’t want to go through it again. For some the rise in fuel cost won’t effect them much, but for the guys who make their living on the road or in the automotive industry, well, let’s just say they’re in for some tough times. The higher fuel prices go, the higher prices we’ll pay to receive our goods and services. It’s a vicious cycle, but one that looks to be inevitable at this point.
Those of us who are automobile enthusiasts will also get hit hard. For example, I’ve got three cars that all run on premium fuel (cry me a river I know…), but if it ever came down to filling them all up at one time that would mean a minimum expenditure of almost $200. Hell, that’s a payment on a new small car (I can hear the electric car people of world already rejoicing). Anyway, I’m thinking that I may go out an purchase another motorcycle as getting around on that thing will cost me next to nothing, or I could simply take public transportation (which I hate by the way). Either way though I’ve got to come up with a plan for this season. How about you guys, what do you do to save money when fuel prices jump? Via RideLust

By: tazgts 3/4/2011 1:30 PM Simple, don't buy anything but gas and everyone will lose their jobs again...all I can say is stand up to the government and say "FUCK OBAMA!" He's gonna seriously ruin our economy and it will be worse than last time, and any so called "recovery" we made will be gone. |

By: MrAMC1 3/4/2011 1:44 PM I am waiting to break out my "fuel efficient" summer rides. I get 16-20 mpg with them compared to the 12 I'm getting with my van now. The way I figure even if I spend $400 a month on gas as apposed to the $275 I am spending now, that is still cheaper than a payment and insurance on a new car that gets 25 mpg. I might as well grin and bear it. If it goes to like $7/gal then I might have to rethink my current situation. I don't spend money on fancy cell phones and Ipods and cable and crap like that so gasoline is my guilty expendature. I do try to be as green as possible with everything else I do to combat it. I recycle about 95% of the stuff I use at home. And buy American whenever possible. |

By: Idefix 3/4/2011 1:48 PM I'm building a top secret underground cash of petrol, that I'll use when the prices go up XP In all seriousness, I'm thinking getting a crappy econo car for the city and my plaything 4g63t for the times when I want to ENJOY driving. My question is, what will they do for racing communities...I mean it's no longer a choice for them, they NEED high amounts of high octane fuel no matter what. |

By: cerbera001 3/4/2011 2:16 PM for those of you who fear the 4$/gallon , here in Canada more specifically in my region its now at 1.33/L which is about just over 5$/gallon , and yet i and many others still drive large SUV , i get 14-15 mpg with my explorer which isn't that bad when i compare with a few of my friends , and in the last few years gas prices as spiked to 1.50/L(5.60$/G) a couple of times , so really thinking of getting a diesel car and start making bio-diesel myself ,screw the oil companies , a little tdi 60 mpg hell yeah |

By: NickHolla 3/4/2011 2:27 PM Parking the Z71 and driving my future lemons race car, aka 85 Toyota Corolla SR5 5 speed. Also in the process of buying an 80's honda 250 for the summer. Trying to keep it fun! |

By: SouthernGuy8503 3/4/2011 2:31 PM Well I've always had full size Chevy V8 trucks, when gas got up to $4 before I still drove my truck as much as I did before. It's what I want to drive and I won't let anybody or anything make me buy a small car or truck if I don't want one. All I can do is keep the tire pressures equal and try to drive like you're supposed to. I just laugh when I hear people with 25 mpg cars complaining about gas prices, but I guess they're used to paying less than $20-25 for a fill-up. |

By: Troy_RUFFCUTT 3/4/2011 4:03 PM Coming from living in Germany where it was costing me about $8 a gallon to fuel my marauder, ive learned to have a daily driver. Im currently in Iraq...but im looking at getting an old Geo Metro or something for my daily commutes. I wish I could have kept my 92 Opel Astra...it was champ with gas. To tazgts, the gas rise has nothing to do with our goverment its about the instablilty in the middle east right now with all the countries asking for regime change. Also as Americans we always want heavier cars with bigger engines and more horsepower... then complain about fuel, figure that out. |

By: DaveyBoyo 3/4/2011 5:27 PM lol @ 90xj ..seriously though, you american crybabies need to suck it up. you're still paying a good portion less than what we are in Canada, not to mention Europe. If fuel prices stay WHERE THEY ARE it's gonna cost me $90 to fill up the Camaro (my daily driver) this summer and that's getting MAYBE 250 to a tank. |

By: DaveyBoyo 3/4/2011 5:28 PM (Miles, that is) And that's if I keep my foot out of it. |

By: fortyfordsedan 3/4/2011 5:52 PM I have a neon that is pretty easy of fuel to get me around most of the time, a 40 ford for when I want to cause trouble and a 2001 dak for when i need to haul something or drag a project home. I think I'm in pretty good shape. If things get really bad I could pump up the tires in the neon and find a transmission from a SOHC Neon because they had a higher final drive ratio. |

By: tazgts 3/4/2011 6:23 PM Oh I understand what's going on in the desert, it's the fact that this stupid war is also ruining our economy (with million dollar missiles and crap) and yet there's enough gas in ALASKA to last everyone in America 100 YEARS. WTF happened to Obama pulling troops out and ending this waste of all our tax money. I'll say it again fuck our government, they need to stop acting like the world police and help Americans, not middle easterns. |

By: ___nes___ 3/4/2011 6:39 PM I really never cared how high the prices go up, but I do keep it civilized while in town. On the highway I hardly ever do over 70mph. I tend to stay on the right 2 lanes doing 65, if someone is behind me tailgating I can careless since I'm on the left two lanes so everyone can move along on the left lane. |

By: ShaddowEdge 3/4/2011 7:43 PM I haven't toned down my driving but I did switch to using a motorbike as my daily vehicle. Went from using 12L/100km to 3.7L/100km. I love filling up the bike. Never ever worry about the fuel price. |
|
|
By: SouthernGuy8503 3/4/2011 9:07 PM Well "DaveyBoyo" - I've never had anything good on gas and never complained about it even when gas was $4. Didn't even bother me when it cost me $97 once, I can only go 200 miles before it's gets to 1/4 full). Which means even though you're paying more gallon (liter in your case), my tank is bigger and cost roughly the same while not being able to go as far on a tank. So if you want to say all American's are crybabies I'll say all Canadians are just mad that you just have to live in Canada, that simple lol. Especially since you basically just complained about paying $90 to fill up on 250 miles if you keep your foot out of it, so you just did what you said Americans should stop doing. |

By: dgaf88 3/5/2011 7:50 AM I'd rather walk than drive something I hate, If I really start hurting for cash when it comes to feeding my surrogate children, I'll buy a motorcycle, they're actually cool and good on gas, unlike any of the fuel miser cars available past or present. |
|
|
By: ChAMbER_CUStOMS 3/5/2011 7:58 AM Right now in Ottawa,ON the price is 1.22/L which is about 5.49/gallon so it's pricey BUT i never worry about it. Even if it was at 4.50/gallon (1$/L) it will only cost me 13$ more for a fill up in my blazer, that's not enough to break the bank but it still pisses me off. |

By: ghardy27 3/5/2011 8:51 AM planning on adjusting my carb for better economy for this summer. only take out the beast on occasions or when its really nice out.. |

By: 2digits 3/5/2011 10:11 AM @SouthernGuy8503 & DaveyBoyo - Yes DaveyBoyo pays 67 cents more a litre then SouthernGuy8503 according to GasPrices.com. However SouthernGuy8503 will end up spending 1,080 dollars more a year on fuel according to fueleconomy.gov [Point] It's all relative... DaveyBoyo your single handedly making Canadians look bad. (I am Canadian) |

By: 2digits 3/5/2011 10:14 AM I don't care about fuel economy in the Mustang it's smiles per gallon not miles (For the most part). In the Jetta I basically follow as many proven methods as I can to get better fuel economy. |
|
|
By: HotRodHoney 3/5/2011 1:05 PM My daily driver is not fuel efficient by any means, and neither is my summer fun car. Luckily I live fairly close to work, and if things get really bad, I will likely drive just to work and back. I refuse to sell my babies for some boring fuel sipping vehicle. I agree with you 2digits...smiles per gallon it is! ;) and I can't stand it when people ask me how good the gas mileage is on my Mustang....you're missing the point buddy! I do however enjoy the looks of disgust from those Prius people when I pull up along side of them at a light with my obnoxious Malibu. haha |

By: GTwildfire 3/5/2011 5:34 PM My strategy is I have no strategy. I already use my brain to get things i need and do things that need to be done while I'm out and about... Not changing driving habits or hypermiling... NOT my style, not me. Just gotta be like a jackass in a hailstorm 'n stand there 'n take it when I fill up. |

By: ChAMbER_CUStOMS 3/6/2011 5:13 AM @ 2digits, this is the second post i've seen recently where daveyboyo makes us Canadians look bad. |

By: Grimjoker 3/6/2011 8:06 PM I'ma drive my little cavy for a daily. I'm hoping to get a progect car to work on and by the time I fix it maybe gas prices would have dropped XD |

By: Cyberdyne2500 3/6/2011 9:44 PM I just drive a little less, I can't help putting my foot into the tank. |

By: Katakuna 3/6/2011 11:22 PM I'm about to drive an '87 Chrysler 5th Avenue to Colorado. From Kentucky. Oh GOD this is gonna kill my wallet... |

By: racertci 3/7/2011 8:17 AM I plan on doing slightly less burns this summer and only FLOORING IT on HALF on the freeway on ramps. It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for the betterment of our country. At the track I intend to run one less practice lap then I normally run. |
|
|
By: StreetsideStig 3/7/2011 9:30 AM I'm with you. I'm buying my first motorcycle this month (hopefully) and driving it until late September. My car is fairly efficient, but it can't reach 80 mpg, so it's getting mothballed until it sees some frost on the windshield. |

By: mrud1 3/9/2011 8:03 PM Hi guys. How about a voice from us in small country. I,m from Philippines. Lives in Manila. My route to work is between 8km and 10km. And for people who can afford to drive to work daily, its heavy traffic that really kill our fuel mileage. Disciplined driving is the secret to better fuel economy. Did my best to drive at constant slow speed. Never tailgate and make sudden brakes and hard accelerations. I also observe less crowded route to reduce stop and go. I try to record my improvement. Hard driving is 4km/L. Slowly improved it to 5, and then 6. Had a lucky day at 9km/L. Now I average 8km/L. I admit, my improvement goes with an engine tune up. |
