Do Today's Cars Make A Fashion Statement?

When people talk about cars being a fashion statement, I often have to ask, "well what are you driving?" To me, very few cars catch my eye on today's roads, and I realize this is largely due to the available color choices: most cars are pretty monochromatic, and the colors generally muted. They seem to be painted to blend into their environment, in various shades of grey, blue , and beige. It reminds me of camouflage in the animal kingdom: are automakers afraid of wild lions coming after midwestern families in their family sedan or SUV?

If the adage is true that your car reflects your own characteristics, it's hard to see how today's designs represent anything that anyone would want to aspire to. Who wants to be oddly-proportioned, bulbous, back-heavy, vastly spacious, big nosed, or cross-eyed right from the factory? I guess in the end, I agree that a car can be fashion statement in cases like the SLS pictured below, but for most of the commuting world, it's hard to see how this logic applies.

What's your opinion? Is there anything remotely fashionable about modern commuting? What catches your eye in modern car design?

a friend of mine had a great point the other day: "I spend all my time inside the car, not outside looking at it so i care about the style, comfort, and convenience of the interior. who cares about outside? someone out there will always have more $ than you and their car will look cooler."

Italian cars make a fashion statement. Luckily, we're gonna start getting more of them over here again.

i do not spend all my time inside the car. i live on the 3rd floor and there is an exterior staircase and the entire time i am checking out my jeep. how a car looks is almost as important as how it handles

for one thing, the SLS isnt the most attractive car by any means...i probably wouldnt like the thing if it wasnt for its heritage. i do agree that a car CAN reflect its owners characteristics, but that is not always true. some just take what they can afford. for me, my 97 grand prix GTP represents me pretty well. although i would prefer many other cars over it, i cant afford them. so for me, it is mildly sporty on the outside, it is civilized, mature, and fun all at the same time. on the inside, its luxurious, and unknown to many, is supercharged. essentially, its calm on the outside, but ready to stick up for itself when it needs to. like me =)

I agree fully with boatdude13, in a way it's a description of you just as easily as music choice describes your character/personality. You'll see more things ring true when it's car enthusiasts. People that buy a car to go from point A to point B, well...I'm not going to go into that because that's blasphemy XP You'll always have a certain like for what you buy because of your taste. May it be in fashion or build quality. A car can be a fashion statement only if the driver so chooses but looking at what we have to choose in terms of new cars coming out, I guess the government wants us to be bland and blend out in a crowd (only a few will truly stick out). Stick to the old ones and you'll definitely show your true colors.

@B5BAR - Beautifully written, the reason for the bland colors is manufactures have to make sure the color will coat the same on different surfacesd. Because now cars are made out of fast materials. ie. Aluminum hood sheet metal doors, carbon fiber roofs, "plastic" bumpers. I'm sure people who have been to a body shop and seen the brochures that paint might not match different materials can attest. Useless factoid it takes over 1 year to develop a single car color. Thats why so many manufactures just reuse exciting ones... I don't if there is any sense of fashion towards the design of a OEM car. But a sense of individuality is had once someone owns a vehicle and designs to make modifications. Such as the million of people who use this site, all of them make changes to suit there opinions, and a opinion is a make of the beholder; so my answer is yes

IDK about cars making a fashion statement, lately all late model cars pretty much look the same for me so buying a new car now a days would be more like buying a uniform for school. If anything I'd say a car is more of a expression of yourself, cause it's what you do to the vehicle that makes you stand out and create an impression. Well least from an enthusiast POV XD

many of today's cars look great. Whether or not they're great cars... time will tell.

There are still good designs out there. The problem is they've been crowded out by all the fuel sipping jelly-bean mobiles out there. Most people think about point A to point B and that's it. I also think about point A to point B, but the difference between me as a gearhead and the rest of the world is that I get to point B quicker :P

I think allot of the upper side of the car market is all about how much they can scream look at me, while the lower side of the market is bland, functional and blends. I like this and hate this about modern cars. But I love it when I'm out in a classic car because it really stands out in such a sterilised crowd.

Fashionable cars is a niche. Not all of the super cars came out fashionably great. And most of the common regular cars are sure as be bland. But car makers do their best to bring out good looking cars. I may not be able to afford an exotic yet, but well restored classics are equally fashionable to me. So, I do admire those people here in Car Domain who were able to make their cars look fashionable enough in their own respect. Hats off to you guys!
