What Happens When Rats Get Into Your Volt

I don't think we need to make too much of this, because let's face it: rodents are bad news for any vehicle with a wiring harness. Plus the automotive press is always looking for sensationalistic ways to show that electric cars won't work, and I'm not playing that game. Still, it stands to reason that the Volt's electronics are a little more complicated, and perhaps a little more vulnerable, than the average car's. And on top of that there's the fact that the battery produces a pleasant warmth while charging. All of which makes the Volt a perfect nesting place for chilly rodents looking to escapt the cold, and hey, why not gnaw through a few wires while they're there? That's apparently what happened to the writers at Kicking Tires, whose Volt press car started throwing all kinds of glitchy error messages following an evening of charging in the company of a whiskered visitor. Now the onus is on Chevrolet to come up with some way to deter rats from the Volt. I've heard peppermint oil works wonders...?
