Don't Be On Your Phone!

Have you ever gotten a ticket for talking on the phone while driving? A lot of people have: nearly 600 are written every day in New York State alone. And while this seems harsh enough already, according to state legislation, penalties are about to become much worse. In addition to the already instated 150 dollar fines, drivers caught talking OR texting will now suffer a 2 point penalty on their license. Ouch. And although laws vary from state to state, I did a little research and found that being on your phone while driving is broadly considered illegal and inadvisable. While I agree it is distracting and can potentially cause an accident, so is eating, grooming, and READING. Who else has seen the guy with his newspaper? I would love to hear some opinions on this matter: don't be shy, if you think it should be allowed let's hear why.

GOOD, I'm glad they're cracking down. Especially on the texters. I'd rather have them learn their lesson by getting a nasty ticket than by slamming into the back of my ride while I'm stopped at a red light.

I have always believed that if a person can't hold a conversation with a passenger while driving, they have no business doing it on a phone. I have no issues seeing people on the phone, so long as they are making driving their priority. The drivers who are sitting in the left lane holding up traffic, not signaling, not checking their blind spots, or missing important signs or exits, are the ones giving cell phone driving a bad rap. It is drivers like those that cause governments to pass laws to protect everyone, and take away the rights of people who never had a problem with that type of multitasking.

I see enough texting in the busy school zone near my house each morning. You can get a ticket for it, but when no one is there to issue a ticket, it happens all the time. I fail to see what could be that important that you just gotta text while driving! Wish more people would use hands free phones as well...glad I drive a tank!

If you text and drive you deserve 5 points on your license. My sister does it at every stop light and I literally have to grab her phone and hide it and now she hardly ever does it. Her excuse was that she wasn't moving and therefore it wasn't driving, i tell her that if the car is on drive she's driving no matter what speed. There's no excuse for being so irresponsible.

I'm glad for this... For me it's not so much the talking on the phone part as it is the texting. If your busy looking at the road how can you see whats going on in front of you??? And I'd like to add to nes's comment about his and and I'm glad you did that to her I had to do the same thing for mine lol. I told her "what happens if you look down to text at the light and it changes green? and the person behind you is paying more attention to the light then to the back of your car? Or worse they are coming over a hill and only see a green light and try to rush to make it..."

Yesterday I witnessed one of my school administrators (the guy in charge of detention, wouldn't you know it?) texting a driving. I was understandably P.O.ed... I think drivers should only be allowed to focus on driving while driving. Minus the occasional radio tweak.

I'm all for banning phones, and any thing that is more than a minor hand movement away from controls. A good driver is always prepared for trouble. A distracted driver is trouble.

Texting is indeed much more dangerous to do while driving than talking on the phone. (Not to mention that I believe we are becoming more capable of safely talking while driving because everyone seems to do everything while attached to their phone.) I think texting is more dangerous because it requires a considerable level of concentration- as does driving- and then attempting to switch back & forth between the two. In a world suffering from ADD it seems one will always lose out so rather than killing someone/yourself, just wait to finish that text.
