So far, every car I have ever owned has been an automatic (a total of one, which I inherited). There is nothing simpler than pointing your car in one directing and going. I will say, despite being a devout auto macho, that nothing gets me hotter than seeing a female talk on her phone, apply makeup, and shift gears. Wow, have my children please.
With a tricked out minivan pushing absurd numbers to the rear, many people ask me why I didn’t install a 5-speed. The main reason I kept it auto was due to the fact that it was a turbo motor. In a manual, in order to shift gears, you take your foot off the gas releasing all the air the turbo did all that work to compress. In an auto, you never lift off the gas. Just put the pedal to the metal, and you have max boost all the way through the shift changes. For this reason, in a drag race between two identical Twin Turbo 300ZXs sporting different transmissions, the auto will win every time. There is much talk about the fundamental superiority of being able to shift gears and pop in the clutch, but I can select any one of my four gears without ever lifting off the gas.
Autos are becoming the future. In the same way the tape player has been replaced by the CD player, so too will the new technologies of the automatic phase out the manual transmission. Granted, while autos are very pleasant to drive, they are bloody expensive to repair or replace, and when you attempt to handle it yourself, the results may be less than optimal, as GTwildfire can attest to.
So what about you, are you an Auto Macho or a Stick Shifter? Any good reasons?

By: usnrocker 2/17/2011 7:40 AM My trucks have to be an AUTO because i usually end up towing a trailer... my cars on the other hand i dont care either way... right now my Scion has a 5 speed which is awesome on gas, but at the same time a pain in the ass in traffic |
By: NickHolla 2/17/2011 8:04 AM Manual all the way. I'll take an auto in my truck thou, no need to be rolling through the gears in that beast. My gf has a G8 GT (LS2). It has the 6 speed auto, which is great for accelerating, but when it comes to setting the car up for a turn or when there is deceleration followed by acceleration, the auto is a pain in the ass. Unless your drag racing, I don't see how an auto can keep up with selecting the proper gear, not to mention when you get a lot of power and your trying to get around turns, a clutch helps control how much power is getting to the ground and allows you to control engine speed better. |

By: SouthernGuy8503 2/17/2011 9:08 AM I pick manual even in a daily driver in town or the city. My first vehicle of my own was an 86 Chevy Custom Deluxe manual which is what I learned on. The truck I have now is auto but only reason is because you hardly see an 88-98 Chevy Silverado with a manual, if you do it's either not for sale or ragged out. I've also driven big commercial straight trucks and 18 wheelers. My main straight truck I drove had a 10 speed Eaton Fuller and it was fine even around town. I don't mind driving a manual around town, after awhile you get so used to it that you don't think about it. I know some people like a manual but don't like it around town but it doesn't bother me. I just like being able to shift gears. Also if you think about it, manual vehicle reduce someone from multi-tasking, hard to multi-task when you're steadily shifting gears around town or a city. I can almost guarantee that if all vehicle came with only manual transmissions it would be less accidents on the road, at least the ones caused by multi-tasking. |

By: pblier 2/17/2011 9:42 AM Manual ftw...you get so much more control and feel for the car. |
By: jond91 2/17/2011 9:43 AM I'm gonna have to agree with Nick & SouthernGuy, my car is not fast but it corners well. I feel much more comfortable and in control being able to pick what gear I'm in going into a corner. I daily drive the car during the summer months and I live in a city (well, a city in Maine). Sure my left calf gets tired when I catch every red light but I think its worth it. I find driving an automatic to get very boring. I like having something to do, and even though it might be psychological I feel more in control in a manual. On a whole new note I live in Maine, so we get a fair amount of snow. Maybe its just me but I find driving a standard in the snow has much more control. My Subaru I drive in the winter is a standard as well and I haven't been stuck yet. Could be the AWD factor, but Ive driven my Mini in the snow the last two years and I believe being able to control the power going to the wheels gave me more control. Maybe everything Ive said is wrong, but Im just giving my input. |

By: DaveyBoyo 2/17/2011 9:44 AM I hate to disagree with SouthernGuy, but I've mastered the art of balancing a hot coffee on my lap (no cupholders), txting and driving and shifting my 400HP Camaro in the rain. Multi-tasking is no big deal. Distracted driving is another entirely. Like he attested to earlier in his post, after a while you get so used to it that you don't even think about it. That being said, I'm glad I don't live in the city because I hate having to balance the clutch in stop & go traffic. Especially a stiff one. |
By: B5BAR 2/17/2011 10:05 AM I live in the snow belt. There is no better way to keep control of your vehicle than to have a manual transmission with clutch. The clutch is the best traction control system invented. Combine that with AWD, and a Turbo, you can lug through gears using turbocharged torque to grant acceleration, not high revving HP causing wheels to spin. The car also won't shift gears by itself in the middle of a corner, and you can easily go into coasting mode (not applying power or brake force) in emergency situations. I agree that Automatics are superior in drag racing every time, but for many of us, there is a lot more to driving than 0-60 times. |
By: SuzyBruisy 2/17/2011 10:19 AM Manual. I like shifting my own gears, and most automatics don't shift when I want them to. Automatics kind of baffle me, frankly. Sure, they're kind of nice in stop-and-go traffic, but that's not exactly my favorite driving situation, and in general I think they encourage lazy, passive driving. Just one more intermediary technology that gets between you and the experience of the road. |
By: FuryPaul 2/17/2011 11:02 AM I love driving a manual, but I don't know how much longer I'll be doing it. Only one of my four cars has a third pedal, and it's the one I'm seriously considering retiring this year. |
By: Cyberdyne2500 2/17/2011 11:10 AM I love the manual in my truck. I have a 97 Chevy Silverado, and the stick was one of the deciding factors in getting it. I love to run through the gears, but I gotta say driving an 2010 Volks GTI in sport mode is a blast! I would hate to mod or repair anything on it tho. I'll still keep the stick, in any car! |
By: ajzhotrodz 2/17/2011 11:12 AM Manual all the way here in America people are lazy in Europe u have to know how to drive a Manual to get ur license the problem her is that people want to talk on there phones eat drink and even get dressed behind the wheel my kids first car is going to be a Manual even if by that time i have to go to the junk yard to find one |
By: krush454 2/17/2011 11:15 AM anyone who says its "annoying to shift so much" in traffic and also claims to be a driving enthusiast is an idiot. driving either my chevette 4 speed, which i need all 4 shifts to hit 35mph, or my protege5 5 speed, i dont even notice im shifting in normal traffic. Manual all the way, because in an auto, its about the same mentality as a sewing machine, so you and your mom can go ahead and share that :) MANUAL FOR LIFE! |
By: Gregarious 2/17/2011 11:20 AM Manual all the way!!! Automatic sucks balls!!! |
By: ___nes___ 2/17/2011 12:06 PM I'm learning how to drive manual right now in a turbo Jetta and its fun and better to change my own gears but living in California with the most horrible traffic ever I'm not in a rush to switch to manual. Given the choice though of what tranny my Camaro should have I would've said manual. |
By: SouthernGuy8503 2/17/2011 12:09 PM Well "DaveyBoyo", one saying I won't forget is that when someone is multi-tasking they can't do those things as well as when they're doing just 1 thing at a time. Just because you can multi-task while driving a manual doesn't mean it's good or that the person doing it is "good". I personally don't think it all that smart to multi-task like that, if you get in a wreck most likely it will be your fault for multi-tasking, if it's not you're fault then you'll still maneuver not as well which means you could have avoiding the wreck. The hot cup of coffee spilling on your crotch during the wreck will just add insult to injury. |

By: 04NEONSE 2/17/2011 12:19 PM Automatic..... hahahahahahhahahah good joke! dude manual cars can beat autos even with turbos! your auto trans. is not going to shift at the right times and you dont need to take your foot all the way off the gas when shifting therefore it wont loose boost. if you drive an auto than you don't know how to drive... |
By: 04NEONSE 2/17/2011 12:25 PM AND he calls himself an "Auto Macho"!!! hahahahahahahaha more like "same driving ability as a soccer mom" |

By: 2digits 2/17/2011 12:33 PM David Swenson, read a book. Automatics are not "faster" then a manual they are more consistent, and cheaper to run. Which is why they are used at high stakes drag racing. Paddle shifters are not Automatic transmissions they are a clutches manual. Such as the ones on Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW. Also Automatic transmissions increase parasitic loss not allowing you to put down as much power up to 30% in some. You have to run lower rear end gears, there heavier, and cost more to maintain on a daily driver. In my own bias opinion all cars should be manual. I think it would prevent traffic congestion, accidents, and people not paying attention when they drive or "multitasking" So please get rid of the notion that Automatic transmissions are "better". They are more consistent; but that is what driving is all about trying to push yourself Note: Paddle shifters are known to increase track day times by as much or as little as a second depending on the track. Again they are not automatic transmissions. Maybe someone should become a real car enthusiast before posting, next time try googling Automatic Transmission before you open your mouth. Nothing I hate more then ignorant slander based on one persons opinion. Based on no facts just opinions or talk. When they are in a position to do so. Seriously get out more go to some car events, and ask questions to people who actually own or experience the topics you are trying to imply rather then your ignorant friends |
By: 2digits 2/17/2011 12:35 PM Oh yeah manuals are more fuel efficient also |
By: SouthernGuy8503 2/17/2011 12:36 PM By the way, the only reason Autos "might be the future" where there will be 0 manuals being but in new vehicles is only because people are slowly getting more and more lazy. In an Auto the vehicle still stops accelerating when it shifts so there's no real difference between shifting a manual and Auto if the manual driver knows how to shift. You also lose less HP through the clutch as you do through the TQ converter in an Auto. Plus doesn't hurt that manual transmissions typically are stronger. |
By: SouthernGuy8503 2/17/2011 12:42 PM manuals being put in new vehicles*** |

By: Blackfade 2/17/2011 1:23 PM "auto macho" and proud of it ;) |
By: TDWPgtp 2/17/2011 1:51 PM 2digits, your mistaken. with the current automatic transmission technology, they ARE faster, and ARE becoming much more efficient. take a 05 or 06 GTO M6 vs A5 and you will see. the auto is considerably quicker. while i do prefer a manual, i must dissagree with you. and as far as the paddle shifting cars, they dont only have one clutch, they are DUAL clutch. the reason they are so fast is because the tranny enganges one gear before it dissengages the next. they merely dont have a clutch pedal. and just because he hasnt experienced the thrill or feel of a manual doesnt make him not an enthusiast. just sayin |
By: DUBfanatic 2/17/2011 1:54 PM I prefer the auto's more, just because I haven't had the time to drive a standard. I need to learn in order to drive my father's '68 AMC AMX when it's restored. |
By: 66Mope 2/17/2011 2:18 PM I like both. |
By: cknarf 2/17/2011 2:23 PM I like autos, the turbo 350 in my Formula is pretty tits. Still, I'd LOVE to have a four speed for my car. Manuals are just twice as fun to drive. |
By: FuryPaul 2/17/2011 2:34 PM I have to admit, the old notion of a stick being more fuel-efficient that an automatic seems to be obsolete--at least in some cases. The '11 Mustang V6's highway rating of 31 mpg is for the automatic. Choose the manual and it drops to 29 (the flip side is that the automatic costs a grand more than the manual). The 6-speed Dodge Challengers also get lower mileage numbers than their automatic counterparts, or at least the '10s do. It's a big change from 20 years ago, when choosing the stick instead of the automatic saved me $600 AND got me higher mileage. |
By: durdenss 2/17/2011 2:38 PM 7 out of my 9 cars have been manual. autos are boring. |
By: ___nes___ 2/17/2011 2:46 PM From what car is the middle shifter from? I want to say gt40 but not sure it is |
By: MopTop 2/17/2011 3:08 PM there are only a few cars with auto trans that get more mpg than a manual. Other than those few, an auto is less efficient: less gears and the torque converter makes more heat. Unless your drag racing 9 seconds or faster, standard is better. Automatics are only popular because people are effing lazy!!! |
By: SouthernGuy8503 2/17/2011 3:16 PM If you notice I didn't mention fuel mileage, reason for that is because I really couldn't care less about mileage. I wouldn't want a manual for better mileage or because it's cheaper, it's because I like it more and makes you in more control instead of letting a computer decide for you. In all honestly, if you love cars you shouldn't care for gas mileage at all unless it's a car you drive just because you need something that's good on gas. If you have a stick shift in something like a Camaro, Mustang, Challenger or anything else performance then the overall feeling of driving a powerful car with a manual will make you forget that you're big ol' V8 gets worse mileage than the little 120 HP Honda Civic beside you. Also a good manual driver knows the peak HP and TQ RPM of each gear, the computer for an Auto doesn't. |

By: SpeedisAneed 2/17/2011 3:20 PM My first car i had was a 5 speed jetta vr6 and i loved that thing but time came to sell for a 4x4 and now i have a 4.0l jeep thats auto and it makes me miss my jetta cause it was so much fun |
By: DevilDogg87 2/17/2011 3:36 PM I like autos alot better. Their better on the track and on the street. The only advantage the manuals have is they give you a little more control over the vehicle |
By: 2digits 2/17/2011 3:51 PM I sent a private message to swensonhimer, and apologized for my comments. I did not intend to make him the victim of my slander. @TDWPgtp - Quicker how? You mean it minimized driver error? GTO transmission specs: http://www.automotive.com/2006/101/pontiac/gto/base-coupe/313/packages/index.html Further more those aren't comparable cars now the RS5 vs M6 look that up. Both "semi automatic". Note: it's not really automatic when you have to select the gear... @FuryPaul - An automatic getting better highway fuel millage tell me more... anyone who looks at the link above would be able to figure out why that is. |

By: Shmak1982 2/17/2011 4:03 PM I'm all about the manual, but I do have my fair share of autos too. Most are either because that is what just happened to be in a vehicle that was too good to turn down just for the auto tranny like my Sierra or my D100, or in most of my auto's it's because it is the only option in that model like my Cutlass and my wife's Impala. Believe me, if I had the know how to modify my Cutlass Ciera with say a Cavalier manual tranny, I'd be all over it! I have my share of sticks though. All but one of my S-series are sticks, my Isuzu is a 5-speed, and I bought the particular Aveo I did because it was the only blue one with a manual I could find at that time. Both of my old Pontiacs are auto, but I inherited them both, so I didn't get to pick the trannies. My IROC is a 5-speed, and that's the only reason I refuse to sell it. If it was auto, it'd be a gonner. Like I said, I majorly prefer the driving experience and feel of the manual, but unfortunately I have to just be happy with the auto in some rides. |

By: swensonhimer 2/17/2011 4:27 PM @2Digits, no where had I mentioned flappy paddles. But since you did, they are are just a mode for automating and increasing shifting efficiency whether it be for an electrohydraulic, dogbox or another performance transmission. The transmission of the future I was referring to is the Dual Clutch Transmission (Porsche is calling the Doppelkupplungsgetriebewhich) which utilizes two types of clutch packs, wet and dry. The dry clutch packs, similar to modern day manuals is only used on low power vehicles. Higher powered vehicles producing over 260 ft lbs of torque such as the Bugatti Veyron, utilize the wet clutch pack system which borrow its technology from the automatic. These Dual Clutch Transmissions are classified as both a semi-automatic or automated manual transmission, and increase consistency while decreasing shift times since the next gear is already engaged. This semi-automatic transmission does away with a clutch pedal (hence the classification) and the driver can manually switch gears or leave it in an automatic mode. Look at the BMW M shifter in the pic, BMW even calls their transmission the dual clutch sport automatic. |
By: Ennio_Highlander 2/17/2011 4:42 PM In my opinion, manual is very fun to drive, but auto is more comfortable for daily driven. My Fusion is auto with sequential shifting, perfect for me... but my Ford Ka is manual and it is my daily driven only because is small and very economical. I would have a manual performance car soon. |
By: BIG_CIVIC 2/17/2011 4:56 PM Well, you really seem to have started a debate with this one. But I wonder how someone who's first and only car can claim to be such an aficionado on transmissions and say that autos are best. My car is a semi automatic which "seems" to be the best compromise but I love manuals. Full autos suck. They are so annoying, changing gear when you don't want, delayed throttle response when you floor it, often less gears than a manual, I could keep going but don't want to bore everyone. And not everyone is a drag racer. In other parts of the world we actually have corners which is where manuals come into their own. The only reason I don't have a manual now is because with this car there is no manual option. So the semi-auto is the closest I can get. 5 speed, I can change gear when I want, I can redline it without the engine changing up, just no clutch. I'd like to try those fancy new systems like in the EVO X and ferraris etc. And I'm not hating on you. I saw your ride and it's way cool. I just don't like autos, that's all. |
By: pttransamdriver 2/17/2011 5:13 PM Well this was a loaded question, First let me say that an automatic can potentally,,,, shift faster than a person on their own, unless you drive a $300,000 Supercar paddle shift or lambo auto you arent going to get it. the automatics can shift faster but,,,, the power dosn't fully engage in that moment. Thats why you can't dump the cluch and peel out like you can in a manual. Autos just dosn't deliver the power as efficiantly or directly If any of you remember your physics you know what I'm talking about, thats also why manuals get better gas milage. I prefer an automatic for offroad and trucks but manual all the why for cars or racing. All you "AUTO MAMA's" need to learn how to drive! |
By: 2digits 2/17/2011 5:35 PM @swensonhimer BMW does not call there transmission by the name you said. They call it Double Clutch Transmission notice how it doesn't say automatic. The mode you are talking about for BMW's is called Drivelogic. Good for your able to talk about technology 7 years old. Audi was the first to implement the double clutch calling it Direct-Shift Gearbox. Maybe you should look up the word Automatic. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/automatic Also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_transmission read the first paragraph not enough facts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VU6uvU1Ebnc starts at 4:12 Another fact http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct-Shift_Gearbox Seriously o read a book! I don't know where your getting your bullshit terms from but the Bugatti Veyron uses a DSG sequential transmission http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-automatic_transmission which is a clutchless manual transmission unless selected to go automatic. I know you never mentioned paddle shifters but almost all of these "future transmissions" have them! So your post should say Manuals the transmission of the future. Now more advanced then ever; so advanced you don't need a clutch, and if your feeling lazy you can shift it into automatic. I'd love to continue this debate because you will lose |
By: 2digits 2/17/2011 5:54 PM @pttransamdriver An automatic does not shift faster then a manual. The automatic transmissions your thinking of that shift faster faster then a manual are in fact manual. They are a sequential gear box or EG a"fancy manual". If you look at the gear ratios part of my response you could see how it would seem that automatics shift faster. But in fact the gear ratios are just in a tighter cluster. This is not an opinion this is a fact, if this page had more people that turn your engine, or rebuild your 10g transmission then customers this wouldn't even be a debate. Automatics are so flimsy that all high performance cars with a warranty don't have them. Paddle shifters ARE NOT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS in any way other then they have a button on some that allows electronics to do the shifting for you rather then pressing a paddle. Fact drag racing an automatic is more consistent, and cost effective. PERIOD; On that note what kind of a test is going in a straight line for the second most expensive piece of your car? Boy I hope someone brings up Auto Racing, and tries to tell me there automatic transmissions. The only automatic transmission is the picture is the one the right, Unintently the creature of this post stacked himself 2 against 1 in his ignorance. |
By: 2digits 2/17/2011 6:00 PM Before anyone can jump down my throat the SMG was the first clutches manual. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrohydraulic_manual_transmission Ironically both the cars that innovated the clutches transmission are under 300g The E46 M3 (SMG), and the Audi TT (Direct-Shift Gearbox). I'll be here all week to kick knowledge to you perpetrators. |
By: fortyfordsedan 2/17/2011 6:58 PM I'm a fan of manual transmissions unless I plan to tow or haul a lot with the vehicle. All three of my vehicles have a stick and its more of a zen thing with me. Its something I like doing and it makes me feel more in touch with the car. With the dual clutch automatics that are coming out soon an auto will be more efficient then even the most astute driver but I like a stick the most on the highway. I can decide if I think the car wont lose enough speed to warrant a down-shift, make the shift a little sooner and making these decisions makes the drive more enjoyable. I also notice I am better at regulating my own speed with a manual transmission. I always get a kick out of how heated this question is with enthusiasts. There are positive merits to both in racing or driving on the street and your decision doesn't make you any less of an enthusiast, I think it just means you have different driving style and goals. |
By: 2digits 2/17/2011 7:10 PM @fortyfordsedan I agree 100% I just want to say I'm not saying that automatic transmissions make you less of an enthusiast. I'm saying providing inadequate information, and making false claims does. |
By: 2digits 2/17/2011 7:13 PM if anything swensonhimer is more of a enthusiast then I am. Look at his page! |
By: 04NEONSE 2/17/2011 7:25 PM another fact, auto transmissions have milder gear ratios. In my car the manual is a full second faster than auto in the 1/4 mile. my 1st gear ratio is 3.50 to 1 and i believe the auto is like 2.80 to 1 |
By: fortyfordsedan 2/17/2011 7:27 PM I wasn't under the impression that you were thinking he was more or less of an enthusiast but I do believe that some of the commenter's were. More than anything it was an observation that this debate is always a heated one and it seems like most the people on either side pick one and try to rationalize why it is better rather admit its a preference. |
By: 2digits 2/17/2011 8:12 PM @04NEONSE I already said that it's mostly because of your differential. Autos are always equipped with a higher speeded ring and pinion where applicable. Unless otherwise selected from the options list if able. I'm sure I covered Automatic transmissions robbing power, and only getting better high way fuel millage because they have a higher speeded final drive geared more for long hauls, and less strain on the transmission. |
By: 2digits 2/17/2011 8:15 PM @fortyfordsedan I agree transmission is 100% personal choice. The reason why I blew this thread I guess you can call it now. Is when someone says one is clearly better. When they both serve there own purpose, and are good at different task. It really just comes down to the make of the transmission |

By: 2digits 2/17/2011 8:18 PM "Autos are becoming the future. In the same way the tape player has been replaced by the CD player, so too will the new technologies of the automatic phase out the manual transmission. " By: David Swenson |

By: GTwildfire 2/17/2011 8:28 PM I always want a manual. I always end up getting an automatic. Manuals are hard to find when I'm looking for a ride, and what I find that's what I'm looking for - and a great deal ends up having a slushbox 19 times out of 20. |
By: dallas61 2/17/2011 9:23 PM My Firebird is a automatic and i hate it. it never downshifts when i want it too and accelerating out of a turn is hopeless cause im always stuck in the bottom of third.. oh what i would give for a manual. |
By: AllChevrolet 2/17/2011 9:29 PM Its just about personal preference. Theres no need to attack one or the other. Just because you have a manual, people with an automatic dont know how to drive? My vehicle has an automatic and I drive just fine. |
By: ShaddowEdge 2/17/2011 11:17 PM I read through so much and saw so many taken for granted myths that aren't true. A human is never faster than a machine. For that reason a well set up auto is faster for drag racing. By the time you register you need to change the auto has. Also modern autos (say 5 years or younger) are way more efficient than manual cars to drive. Its all due to gear selection, smoother changing, more ratios and constant monitoring of what the engine is doing. Hell they even down shift on hills for you and that's in base model cars. Even motorbikes are going to semi automatics. Oh and don't make the mistake of assuming that all manual paddle shift cars are a true manual gear box. Most are what be classed as a semi automatic. Allot are dressed up autos these days. I seriously prefer manual cars though. That's why I put a manual into my project car. I prefer them for circuit and hill climbs and just the fun of cruising. Out of 28 cars I've owned 7 have been auto. Two were later converted to manual. Manual FTW but a modern auto has its place. |
By: 2digits 2/17/2011 11:24 PM Automatics don't shift faster. That is infact the myth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Q6I2rjgUL4&feature=related |

By: 2digits 2/17/2011 11:36 PM FYI Carlos Florenca is currently @ 11.54 @ 117mph with a 1.49 60ft. The only modes are a Pro 5.0 shifter; open headers, and no door panels. Of course slicks. An automatic couldn't touch that with 10g of mods |

By: 2digits 2/18/2011 12:00 AM I'll make this real $^$#ing simple if anyone can post a fact with a proven link from a reputable website stating that an AUTOMATIC transmission shifts faster. I will sign my car over to you. This isn't the fastest time. But fast enough to shut all of you up. 0.05 seconds For a Semi Automatic aka FANCY WORD FOR CLUTCH-LESS MANUAL. Proof http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_One_car 2nd paragraph transmission section. And thats not even the fastest. Proof that a Semi Automatic is actually a MANUAL...again http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-automatic_transmission Welcome to class NOOBS |

By: 2digits 2/18/2011 12:11 AM ""Ferrari's first automated gearbox in a road car (They had used them previously in their Formula One cars since 1989) went on sale in 1997 in the Ferrari 355. The most recent iteration of its robotised manual came forward in the Ferrari 599 GTO which was capable of changing gear in ~~~~60 ms~~~~. In the new Ferrari California & Ferrari 458 Italia, Ferrari has opted to use a double-clutch transmission."~ - Still not the fastest manual. GET THE POINT? |

By: 2digits 2/18/2011 12:15 AM I'm going here... This is the same reason why the rest of the world thinks Americans are morons. Because one moron hears something, and thinks it's true you get the crowd effect and a myth is born. And when your proven wrong you have to much pride to admit it. Afghanistan... Sorry I took it there. Books you can find them at your local library, on the internet. |

By: 2digits 2/18/2011 12:17 AM Why is it so hard to believe facts? If I was a moron would you believe me then? |

By: buiebrown 2/18/2011 2:58 AM You picked a hot topic man. This deffinately will produce some great opinions for either or. Personally i have never owned a stick shift because i have a truck and auto is the way to go. but if i owned a smaller car, i would deffinately chose stick. despite all the positives of manual, i just like the feeling you get when shifting, its like you are in more control and are truely driving your vehicle. just my opinion tho |

By: albania_fier 2/18/2011 6:37 AM manual...the less transmission you engine power goes through, and the least harder your engine has to work..keep more hp save more gas |

By: BIG_CIVIC 2/18/2011 6:53 AM You said quote "I can select any one of my four gears without ever lifting off the gas." so I am assuming you have a semi-auto box and not a full auto? With a full auto you cannot select the gears yourself? The car does it for you? That's the point of a full auto, right? Please correct me if I am wrong. |

By: KustomKiely 2/18/2011 7:08 AM Manual is better/more fun for cruisn the Streets etc. but I preffer an auto for drag racing for reliability an ease. My Cpu can shift faster than I can an it doesn't make errors. |

By: NickHolla 2/18/2011 7:18 AM Auto win in two areas.... drag racing and traffic. With one exception, let's say you had a turbo miata. If you had an automatic and mashed the gas, you would just spin the tires. If you had a clutch...... |
By: SouthernGuy8503 2/18/2011 7:50 AM I think some people assume an Auto shifts faster because they don't actually do it themselves. You won't feel it at a slow cruising speed (not supposed to since it's supposed to be a smooth shift without feeling it) but floor it from a stop and you'll clearly see how long it takes to shift. But to make those feel better, an auto could shift faster than my 86 Chevy full size with a manual that had a shifter that was maybe 2 feet long. |

By: 2digits 2/18/2011 12:07 PM @BIG_CIVIC Actual if I can recall since the 50's most automatic transmissions had the the the P-R--N-(3)-2-1 option. But most of todays transmissions have a preservation mode. Where they don't have a lock out so when you select one of those gears in a non optimal driving situation it changes it for you. Also preventing neutral drops, and going into reverse then drive without using the brake. So on so forth, and automatically up or downshifting after selection of the gear. Note: Sorry for my more inappropriate comments, I was upset at the clams of this post, and lack of proof for the notions. No one should feel ashamed to own a Automatic transmission, and having one doesn't make you more or less of anything same goes with a manual. However making notions that Automatics are superior, and manual are out dated is the type of ignorant statement that fuels situations like the one we have here. A little research should be necessary before making clams of any sort. If I have offended you in any way be sure to log onto Cardomain and slander my cars I'm a big boy I can take it. Again Sorry for posting way to many times on this "thread". Fact check your statements before you make them |

By: 2digits 2/18/2011 12:08 PM I mean going from drive to reverse* |

By: 2digits 2/18/2011 12:19 PM I hope if this argument ever pops up again people that have read this thread will be willing to redirect people to this "thread" and determine there own opinion. It's statements like the one I previously quoted from this post that makes research developers think that consumers prefer automatics. When in fact the reason why a lot of cars don't have a manual transmission has nothing to do with it not being good enough. But stats show that most people who buy NEW cars are middle aged, and prefer not to shift gears. However if this attitude continues soon we will lose a clutch pedal in cars we love, and everything will be automated, and drivers will lose the feel you get of a third pedal. Which would be terrible; choice is the spice of life, and the reason why I made countless "contributions" to this topic. It really comes down to personal preference, budget, supply, and demand. Thank You |

By: 2digits 2/18/2011 3:15 PM Never mind noticed the "an" I've gave the article a read. Maybe you should re-read that article, seems like he's making an argument in my case. Because we just learnt that a stand alone torque converter means it's a true AUTOMATIC, and a CLUTCH with a torque converter means it's a SEMI-AUTOMATIC which means "fancy electronic manual", and then there is the conventional manual that needs no explanation. Also notice the lack of proof, and the date this was written. |

By: retroman 2/19/2011 12:23 AM I drive a stick everyday to work through an hour long traffic jam. Still love it. Yeah I can see the whole thing with losing boost, but I also know of some guys who are good at shifting without needing to push in the clutch. It's harder on the vehicle, but it does the trick. |

By: MADMAX333 2/19/2011 1:09 PM Manual everytime! Unless all you ever do is drag race, or live in one of those places where rush hour is an all day thing. Manuals give you a precision of control that is lacking in an automatic. |

By: RockShox 2/21/2011 4:14 PM Classic debate, hahaha. And that's right, its a matter of personal preference. This should rather be a cardomain survey for manual and auto. 1 vote for manual here. In the future, when manuals run out, i'll keep and maintain a manual. On the circuit, some mastered the auto to keep up, but most of the time, its the manuals. Coz at the corners, its you who decide, not the car. |

By: 69Cabeast 4/11/2011 11:07 AM Manual of course my caprice may be stock as an auto but Im putting an M22 Muncie four speed with a Zl1 427 under the hood if its the last thing I do. I want to be able to shift the gears when I rompt on the peddle and let thoughs horse loose and I wont be satified until that Zl1 produces 520 bhp carbuerated (rochester four barrel) while getting 23 mpg. |

By: 1200 or less 12/30/2011 5:10 PM I don't really go for either I just go for the vehicle, I will say if you think manual is annoying in traffic you're probably not that good of a driver |

By: 2digits 12/30/2011 7:29 PM Man I was a snap show, proved my point though. Hopefully you enjoyed the read. |

By: tuner911 12/31/2011 8:37 AM i agree with 69Cabeast, i go for the car, i would go for a manual mustang any day because it would be fun to drive, but traffic in montreal, in downtown sherbrooke is a pain. sometimes you want to relax and enjoy a simple drive in your car, and sometimes a donut or even a burnout from a stoplight is great...if you own manual rwd!!! but nowhere in the book of cars does it say that automatic is any lamer than manual, they both have there plus and negatives. |

By: sidepipes2003 1/7/2012 8:30 AM I love my manual Trans and i would kill to make all my cars manuals, But there are those days especially after a long day on my feet that i am glad to at-least have one car with an auto. |

By: sidepipes2003 1/7/2012 8:41 AM I will take a 350 sbc with a 5sp anyway over anything And who the hell cares about gas mileage anyway If your going to own a car Get what you want (not necessarily Want you can afford or what you think you want) and Drive it. |
