Camaro Z/28: Yep, It’s Still Coming

We recently reported about Chevrolet’s new King Kong Camaro, the ZL1. It’s the fire breathing beast that comes with a slightly de-tuned version of the Cadillac CTS-V‘s supercharged 6.2 liter LSA V8. It’s rated at 550hp / 550 lb-ft of torque and is poised to make the Camaro one bad Mutha’ Chucker. Now while this is all well and good, there is still one question that’s lingering on everyone’s mind; what the hell happened to the Camaro Z/28 that we were promised? Well actually… nothing, and according to Jalopnik, GM wants your opinion as to exactly what it should be. Hmph – now there’s a novel idea! A car company that actually asks for the opinion of the consumer. The Z/28 was always designated as the Camaro SS’s lighter, better handling younger brother and as such that’s basically what we want. How’s this; give us a stripped down Camaro with the Corvette Z06′s 505 hp LS7 mill and brakes, then make it a proper 6-speed, equip it with the stellar Recaro seats from the CTS-V and then drop in a cross-bar so we can strap some harnesses to it, and call it a day. Do that and I have a feeling you’ll have every Camaro person out there jumping for joy. Plus it will be a nice counterpoint to Ford’s track minded Boss 302 Mustang. Photo Credit: Autoguide.com

I think they also need to go to the paint booth and copy 1967-1969 colors and offer those. If you wanna go retro, offer the colors also!

I was one of the few on Camaro5.com that called it before the unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show that the "BEAST" would be the ZL1 and I believe the Z28 is coming out as a limited production run to concide with the release of the Trasnformer III movie........ Since the TF III Camaro is acting as a Z28 in the movie!

Mike you made this article seem like you were selling me the car and I was ready to buy it. All the things you said will make it a great car for enthusiasts.

Just make it a car for the real enthusiasts. Offered in a manual only, that kinda stuff. The LS7 probably won't happen, but some new aggressive styling would be in order. Just so that even from a distance down the road you know its a z28.

I like your thinking, but I'd love to see a factory Camaro with an LS9, and then throw in a Yenko heritage type package for a few $$$ more.

Beautifully written Mike, I agree thats what every car enthusiast wants. I'm sure they will produce this car. Since Dodge has came out with the 392 and Ford with the 302 (Laguna Seca). We are the ones going to benefit reminds of hearing about the muscle car wars.

They need to put it up against the Boss 302 mustang, so they should go off that lol
