Should Ford Sue Ferrari?

How funny is this? According to PickupTrucks.com, Ford is suing Ferrari for naming their new Formula 1 race car the F150 (which, according to Ferrari, is a tribute to this year's 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy). I guess it is understandable that Ford would want to protect their trademark, but the whole thing is kind of silly. I guess we now know the real story behind this video

Update: Ferrari caves under pressure, renames car F150th Italia!

Maybe they're still upset that they didn't get to purchase Ferrari back in the '60s...

I would say let it go because the F150 does make sense for Ferrari. F for Ferrari and 150 for the 150th anniversary of something very important for the country not just Ferrari. Also wouldn't it make Ford look bad with all the talk of people suing for any reason they can? Lastly to get technical; Ford's version of the name is actually "F-150" while Ferrari's F1 car name is "F150", see a difference? Think about how much Ferrari could spend on lawyers that will simply point out that even though the name is the same, they're not in the same format.

Naming a Ferrari an F150 is like taking a big, steaming dump on the American flag. America's best-selling truck should not be tarnished by association with those overpriced Hearth Logs!

woah! ferrari just got scared that their cars would be eaten by angry Ford Raptors. I don't think they intentionally wanted to compare these completely different vehicles. Ford didn't need to threaten lawsuit

The people at ford are idiots, it's an f1 car, NOT A TRUCK. Any idiot with eyes know that doesn't look a damn thing like anything ford will EVER produce. Hell it's just for a year... next year it will be the f151 lol. Ferrari should have called it the Fu150

Obviously, Ford is pretty serious about that trademark. I'm sure some of you remember back before the Toyota Tundra was introduced, as the successor to the T100, it was actually going to be named the T150. Ford got pretty cheesed off, and Toyota renamed it at the 11th hour. I was the project manager for the supplier of the badging. I had to scramble to tool-up the new badge in time for the introduction and production. I actually left behind a drawer full of T-150 badges when I left that company.

Ford definitely paid Ferrari for that... Its name recognition... Mike Rowe can only do so much.

I think it has more to do with protecting their trademark than anything. If they let it go then there is precedent that could allow someone to violate their trademark in a way that does hurt Ford. Companies do this all the time and its not malicious. Ferrari meant nothing by it and Ford realizes its an apples to oranges comparison but they have to protect their interests. Its not really anything worth getting riled up about
