Clean Your Car on the Cheap!

I was in the local Wal-Mart the other day, and of course made a pass through the automotive section where I noticed an unbelievable sale: this entire package of Turtle Wax products (all full sized) for 10 (that would be TEN) dollars! Every item in the box costs at least 5 on its own. I felt like I was stealing when I bought 3 boxes for only 30 bucks.

It seems like a lot of the big retailers have overstocked these kinds of "car care gift packs" this season, and not enough of them sold over the holidays so now they're clearancing them at insane discounts. It's a great chance to stock up on car-cleaning staples, and the timing couldn't be better: wintry weather spells such disaster for our beloved cars with all the corrosive road-salt and muddy slush, that it feels nice to get them some detailing goodies to get them back to shiny and clean. Check out Wal-Mark, K-Mart, Target, and similar retailers; the shelves are brimming with these products right now and they're cheaper than I've ever seen them.

What's your take on keeping your car clean over the winter? What products are your favorites?

I've been keeping my car clean this winter by not driving it... I tend to just buy the Meguiar's stuff. Seems to work.

I've been getting spoiled on Griot's Garage products lately, but it seems that even they have started offering product party-packs around the holidays. There seems to be a glut of these car-care gift bundles on the market lately, but anyone who's even remotely interested in cars has usually already received multiples of them, or given them out and gotten back an only lukewarm response (it IS the ultimate cliche gearhead gift). So just as manufacturers are ramping up production, people's desire to get and give these gift packs is on the wane. Let the clearance sales begin!

My winter car care consists of: wash car any time its above 0 degrees, pay attention to rockers and wheel wells to get the salt off, full clean polish wax come spring time when the streets are cleaned and rock free.

Does anyone know of a good wheel cleaner, like the mother's power ball or similar? I really don't know how effective they are and I don't want to pay $10 for the formula and $20 for the power drill extension for just OK results
