Paint It or Leave It?

66Mope

This cool 360 4-speed Challenger was recently purchased by the friend of a guy on Moparts. The new owner want to ditch the custom old school 70s look and paint it Plum Crazy. Someone started a poll and so far close to 90% of the folks on Moparts would leave it alone. I think Moparts member 68Cbarge put it best:

Sure it is dated, but I would leave it alone. Along with the van craze, personalizing the car was the rave in the 70's and it is a perfect example of a 70's custom time capsule. It almost looks like it jumped off a cover of a vintage "Car Craft" or "Rod & Custom" magazine. It's got attitude.

Nobody can replicate that paint job nowadays. Try doing that in water-bourne paints-almost impossible compared to lacquers, acrylics, and enamels. A lot of gifted painters have passed and they took their secrets- and techniques with them.

I wish I had the money and buy it before any sandpaper hits the paint. It's his car,so I can't stop him.

What would you do?

there are too many cars the are all painted the same this one will stand out in a carshow since it different and unique and shows pride and craftsmanship somthing we are lacking in the modern "mass produced" world we live in today. I say leave it as is and drive it and enjoy it

Leave it the way it is! It's awesome, plus the last thing the world needs is another Plum Crazy Mopar.

Looks better than the jacked up over size wheel look. Or the new Camaro.....even a gay ass Miata.

I have to say it looks pretty nice. If he just wanted one to paint plum crazy, why buy this one? Why not buy one that is already plum crazy, or one that the paint is deteriorated on and needs a new color? I just wouldn't buy a car with a custom paint job if I didn't like the paint job unless it was a one of a kind car.

i love it... if the new owner messes with it, cut their testicles or head off.... either one is effective...

I can definitely appreciate and respect the sentiment, and I have seen '70s custom paint that I loved... but this doesn't cut it for me, not at all... I hate it. I would do one of two things if I had this car. First I would post ads everywhere for a possible swap (very unlikely, but the paint job is in good shape and a good example, I just don't like it) and if that attempt failed to swap over to a similar car with more suitable paint I would reluctantly move over to option B and paint the sucker. Respect the paint job done to this car, but also respect the right for someone who buys a dream ride like this wanting to exercise his right to have it look the way he wants. It's not like he wants to adorn it with spare lawnmower parts... he just wants to go with a less complicated paint scheme in a color he likes.

I agree with GTwildfire 100%. If it was mine I would paint it too.

I say keep it as is and the money he would have spent on new paint use to have a thorough detailing job done on it.

Either leave it, or trade it for one that could use a respray. This thing needs to be treasured for what it is, and incredibly clean piece of memorabillia. Not many cars modified back in the day have withstood the test of time, it would be a sin to send one to the slaughter just for making it look the same as every other one thats out there at the moment

LEAVE IT !!! Plum Crazy overdone, and leaving it ,makes it unique!

That paint job managed to make the one mopar that I like look ugly. I would repaint it but I also agree that Plum Crazy is the most over rated and over done color for vintage mopar. Then again I did not pay for it so I guess that I don`t get a say in what color it is.

This is definately a Unique and "one of a kind" ! Leave it as is, Just find a great paint/body man to repair the small rust spots near lower wheel-wells. I too believe this is a great example of 70's personalization and style!

For a '70's muscle car - it's perfect. I would not change a thing. It proudly represents a generation.

This looks perfect the way it is.... it is even in good shape. The paint already looks new.

The new owner must be nuts of young (assuming Dad's money purchased this beauty and then he gave it to his son). This is stunning workmanship! There are enough Plum Crazy Mopars out there. KEEP IT AS IS!!!

With those beautiful chrome Mags, LEAVE IT! Screw painting it purple! How many Plum Crazy Purple Challengers, Cudas, Chargers, Darts, Roadrunner, etc. are out there? Probably a lot! I couldn't bring myself to paint over those beige to brown fades on the hood/sides with flat black...

I just happened to find this post today. I purchased this car in May, and some of you will be happy to know, that the paint remains unchanged. http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz98/j_zahler/Challenger/UpdatedTwo.jpg
