Transmission Rebuild 101

I'm finally rebuilding a replacement transmission for my Grand Prix, and documenting the progress on its ride page. The automatic transmisson is something that a lot of people, even some mechanics, simply refuse to work on. Like the roof on my house however, if it's expensive to have someone else do, I'll take a stab at it. More after the jump...

I bought a master rebuild kit on eBay for $100, which includes Borg Warner steels and clutches. I also bought instant experience. You read that right: I am using a 4T65E transmission repair video, also purchased on eBay. It may be one of the best investments I have ever made. Sure, it may give enough confidence to tackle a job like this, but much more importantly this experience will be utilized, maybe over and over again.

As this project progresses I'll provide updates. This is not something that will take months or even weeks. It will take days, in fact the disassembly progress as shown only took 2 hours. I need this car on the road for a trip to Georgia for Christmas. Wish me luck, and check out my Grand Prix GT ride page for more info and pictures.

My boss at my old garage showed me the inside of an automatic once and said, "See that? It's a maze. It's to confuse the fluid." Lol.
