Winter's here, people! And for those of us up north who can't stand the thought of road salt and the elements tearing up our cars, that means it's time for this year's episode of hide your ride. Common practice 'round here is to put your pride and joy away, and find something more... ahem, "expendable" to drive for the season. I got this: a rough 2002 Grand Prix GTP. Yeah, it makes a pretty badass beater with the supercharged 3800 and all, but it wasn't really my style. So I opted for a more humble mode of transportation. Follow the jump to see!
It's a 1987 Olds Cutlass Ciera! Woooo!
My granddad picked this up for $157 wholesale, and I convinced him to let me trade the GTP for it. It's actually pretty clean for its age, and judging from the maintenance records in the glove box, it has been well maintained: the last service was in June 2010, just 1500 miles ago. It's been garaged, has had two previous owners, and came with all the original paperwork, including the window sticker (34 MPG highway! Yeah!) and a list of the options it's equipped with. Minimal rust, 131k miles, and it runs. Hella slow, but it gets the job done. The interior is okay, except for the warped dash, falling headliner, and the cracked-as-all-getout steering wheel. I can't figure out how to get the trunk open, and that pisses me off, 'cause there's some nice factory hubcaps in there. But every cloud has a silver lining...
POW! It's the Iron Duke 2.5! This little shit sounds like a diesel at idle. As long as I keep the rpms low and my foot out of it, it should hold up just fine. Best part is, it's a Pontiac engine! I'd rather have an Olds powered by the Pontiac-designed 2.5 than a Pontiac-badged Grand Prix with a Buick/GM corporate engine. Awesome!
What are YOU driving for the winter?

By: 66Mope 12/2/2010 10:14 AM Not much snow here... use the Subaru if it gets really bad but otherwise I prefer my '88 Volvo 240--heated seats FTW! |
By: retroman 12/2/2010 10:33 AM Well, the Navy is sending me and my '87 Fiero to Hawaii, so no worries. :) But, when I'm home in Ohio I run my parents '00 Caravan. When I'm in South Dakota visiting my fiance's family, I use the '06 300C (with heated seats) or the Mercedes, but they said they'd let us dig out the Corvette for the wedding which is coming up quickly. |

By: Medazzone 12/2/2010 10:34 AM 1993 Taurus GL. It's like your grandmother's couch on wheels. |

By: SouthernGuy8503 12/2/2010 10:34 AM Don't get much snow around here in NC but we sometimes do get good snow storms. I just have my '98 Chevy Silverado 1500 Z71 and it does fine in snow, even if it just has street/highway tread tires on it. Every year when it starts to get cold I always test just to see if my 4x4 works. Don't want to wait until a snow storm is about to hit in 2 days, but I also check right before a snow storm just as a precaution. |

By: SuzyBruisy 12/2/2010 10:44 AM 3 things: 1. That Cutlass Ciera is totally Brown Car Appreciation Society material: http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=53967352076 2. Trading a perfectly serviceable supercharged 00's car for a high-miles, 15 years older, 150-dollar beater? Cknarf, you are my people. 3. To answer your question, I just yesterday pulled my AMC Eagle out of storage: the ultimate snowpocalypse machine, still rolling on its snow tires from last year. Winters here are a lot more forgiving in terms of the salt and the weather. But the problem with having an awesome winter car is that you eventually regret running it as a winter car. My Eagle is showing the ravages of its five upstate NY winters, and I'm going to be undoing that damage for a long time yet. |

By: NickHolla 12/2/2010 10:50 AM Had to stop driving the AE85 (future Lemons race car) due to it being frosted over in the mornings. Now driving the Z71. More than doubled my gas bill, too. Lame. |

By: Idefix 12/2/2010 10:56 AM I have a Corolla 2003 as a winter beater :S and boy do we get snow! But the Corolla's so high up and light it's not the best car for snow, sometimes I wish I didn't care about rust or being a snow plow with the Eclipse so I could drive that year-round XP |

By: racertci 12/2/2010 11:55 AM 1988 Ranger 4x4 Lots of rust and it has a plow set up with an electric winch that's works well. The rally stickers allow it to plow quickly! |

By: cknarf 12/2/2010 12:56 PM @medazzone, Your car is awesome. @ Jen, I envy your Eagle, and I totally joined that group before I had this Olds lol. Now I fit in! |

By: cknarf 12/2/2010 1:32 PM Everyone! Good news! I found the trunk release! It was under the seat, with a lawnmower pull start handle and zip ties. Whatever works. Now I can get those pimp-ass wire wheel covers out of the trunk! |

By: DaveyBoyo 12/2/2010 1:47 PM I've got a 1988 Jaguar XJ6. Speaking of your Grandmother's couch, this thing is exactly that. Comfortable as hell, decent on gas (31 MPG on the highway and 19 in town) and a classy ride! Not to mention the RWD makes for some nice drifts ;) |

By: torino_man 12/2/2010 3:02 PM I run a 2004 Dodge Durango as my daily driver. I drive too far to work to drive the Torino everyday in the summer. Plus, the lady that parks beside me at work has dinged my door a few times. I don't mind it on the Durango, but I never want that to happen to the Torino. |
By: Fitz 12/2/2010 4:23 PM For the past couple of winters I've been using my daily driven 2000 Cavalier. I just got my new daily driven 2007 Mazda 3 this Spring, so I'll get to see how it does this winter. Living in rural northwest PA is pretty fun when winter comes. I'm just excited to see how well this car is at doing reverse donuts and drifts! It's going to be hard to outdo the fun I had in my Cavalier at my old high school parking lot! |

By: V6CHVET 12/2/2010 5:21 PM 1993 Olds Cutlass Ciera 307,251.7 miles as of this writing. I'll take a "GM" front drive in the snow over anything.....anything. |

By: iAudi 12/2/2010 7:01 PM Check out my 1999 Audi A6 that looks like a 2005-2010 |

By: gold94corolla 12/2/2010 7:14 PM "Hide Your Ride" LOL!! It sucks up here with the salt.... the rust definitely comes through and I can't stop it. So I just drive it hard all year :) |

By: CasJackson 12/3/2010 5:20 AM No joke w/ the NY winter. We haven't had any snow yet surprisingly, but I wouldn't think for a moment we're in the clear. I've been thinking about get a "back-up" car for the season, but no room in the garage. I might just tuck the ride away and stick to good ole' NY public transportation on the harshest of conditions. |
By: 13sDatsun510 12/3/2010 5:57 AM winter car? ahaha nah im not lookin to get stuck and stranded. ill just stick to my 1980 GMC High Sierra K15. |

By: EricB91 12/3/2010 10:16 AM My girlfriend's 2001 Toyota Camry LE, Mom's 2003 Dodge Caravan, and Dad's 2004 Mazda 3 (with the 5-speed manual) I like the Mazda the best ha. |
By: FuryPaul 12/3/2010 10:17 AM I'll be running the same daily-drivers I run the rest of the year: '91 Daytona and '00 Stratus on alternating days. Both FWD, both paid-for, both not bad in snow. During the five years I was paying for the Stratus, I left it home when conditions were bad, but it's seen winter duty the past four years. |
By: shelby_2blue 12/4/2010 5:02 PM Well, my garage being full of jeeps, they all sort of drive around. but my main mode of beater-ness is my 1991 Jeep cherokee "rusty" with 141,000 miles. |
By: Iasis 12/5/2010 1:04 AM Never snows here in MS. Ice on the streets sometimes and they salt it. I keep my Mustang out the whole winter and don't even change the wheels. I go to a car wash about every week though that has a under body cleaner on it to get the salt off though. |
By: PIchillin456 12/5/2010 4:40 AM This winter I'm just going to see how my only car, a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta 2.5L w/5-speed manual, does in the snow. I'm hoping that the ESP will do the trick but If she struggles I'll consider picking up an old beater to make it through next year's winter. My only concern is leaving enough tread on those tires but that's going to take some restraint because it's too much damn fun to peel out and burn out in that thing. It does it way too effortlessly haha. |

By: Shmak1982 12/5/2010 4:09 PM Very nice. My winter cars is my 1995 Cutlass Ciera. He has earned the nickname "Polar Express" because it has proven unstoppable in snow and ice over the past few winters. I just take off my 17's and throw on my old 14's with snow tires. This will actually be my first year with actual snow tires instead of the old Uniroyal all-seasons I had before, so I'm kinda anxious to see how much better it does. |
