Fart Cans: Love 'Em or Hate 'Em?

Everyone loves a nice sounding car (well at least everyone on CarDomain... my neighbor at 3 A.M... not so much). Anyway, I love a good sounding throathy exhaust, one that really growls. Shows how powerful your beast really is beneath the hood without even a glance at that modifed block. What I hate, thought, is hearing BAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! and then three minutes later seeing a rusted out Camry go flying by with a poorly-mounted fart can bobbing along underneath the car. Seriously, those are the people that give foreign car driver's like me (and maybe you, too) with decently-mounted fart cans with the catiylic converter a bad name. I hate being called a "ricer" or something similar because my exhaust is louder than the factory exhaust system that came on the car. Look at the car below. 2006 Chevy HHR, with a cherry bomb and that big stupid tip sticking out. Why would you do that?! It's dumb, not to mention a burn hazard when using the hatch area. Anyway, I just wanted to voice my opinion on the topic of loud exhaust on low hp cars. I would really like to hear what you guys think about this.

Im not a big fan of them, theres way to many of them around here and its just agitated me. Maybe its where I live but most of the people are ricers. That being said I can hear the difference between a fart can and a powerhouse.

What I don't understand is how these guys think that it actually sounds good. Have you ever been around these cars when they go by, they sound terrible! I'd like to have one of those guys stand on the side of the road as I honk by in his car and ask him if honestly thinks it sounds good. Because if he said yes, I think i'd probably have to bitch slap him... If your going to put a good exhaust on, make sure it sounds good first!!!! And yes that HHR with the tip sticking out is just ridiculous! Good way to get burned not to mention cut your ankle open as you walk by!

If it's used properly, as a high flow exhaust piece on a vehicle that is being tuned by someone that knows what they're doing in their quest for optimum performance, then yes, it's ok. If it's someone that's seen the Fast and the Furious too many times and thinks that sticking one on his Kia Rio will make it keep up with a Corvette because it sounds loud, then no.

I hate them but I laugh everytime I hear one. I think the true dual Flowmaster exhaust behind my 5.7 Liter 350 V8 sounds just a tad better (sarcasm, a lot better). I laugh even more when the guy actually thinks he's a bad ass and cool. Now I do respect an actual tuner (the ones that actually know cars and do real performance mods) but I don't respect a ricer at all that thinks their 125 HP Honda is a speed demon with just a "CAI", an annoying exhaust and maybe 1 or 2 minor performance mods. While having an overdone body kit, Boeing 747 wing on the rear (even though they never been over 80 mph), a bass system that adds a bunch of weight to a so called race car and other exterior mods. RICE = Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements. A real tuner will get their 4 or 6 cylinder to have real speed to go against V8s while keeping their car clean looking, most will have an exhaust with a deeper tone than a "fart can". So again I respect real tuners, just not ricers. Now if the ricer doesn't care for performance but just the looks then I won't talk shit as long as they don't but I'd still laugh at them.

All my previous cars were equipped with after market exhaust. Had a double exit make Codex on me opel astra (2" each), single round exit make Remus on me Rover Vi (Which i admit was the best sound ever), double exit make Codex on me BMW E30 (3" each) very good bass sound. The thing is, the after market exhaust are nice. They surely give a stunning look to the car with those chromes looks and big exit. The sound is great. You seam to convince yourself that, yeah man, i have a beast here. LOL :) Thing is, there is no performance gain guys... Correct me if am mistaken, after market exhaust is just for showing off and waste of money. I had a BMW 320D, that is Diesel, just had the tips changed and for the 540 V8 left is original. Coz am getting an original V8 sound. Maybe am gona have them changed due to wear and tear but still, u drive wha u drive. Not drive wha u try to convince yourself u are driving :)

It doesn't matter how much horse power your car has, low horsepower cars can sound good with modified exhaust, ae86, b and k series honda's, mini's, and a ton more cars have low horsepower but can sound good with aftermarket exhaust. It's about the quality of your system, not how much power you have, although it doesn't hurt.lol

theres alot of them were i live too. i see old 80s plymouths and such like the ares with the fart cans on them. or old cavaliars. ive even seen an HHR with one. its just a cheap way to make a cheap car loud and hence making it sound like poo

Hate these things..If mounted on an old banger..Here in Denmark, if you have an exhaust sticking out from the rear bumper - Further out than rear bumper...200 USD fine..Payable now. Owner will get a notice to report to a road and safety inspection..100 USD more..And owner will have to remove the exhaust..

I know of a Couple Civic Sis near me that aren't ricers. One's got a hell of a turbo setup, the other one's got a sweet-sounding exhaust. I almost feel sacrilegious saying that... Point is, they're two of a kind, there isn't another car like either of them that I've seen. I still wouldn't trade my slow as all hell 1990 Grand Marquis for either one, simply because it sounds like a god screaming.

There is nothing wrong with a powerful sounding vehicle....that actually IS one!!! Nothing gets up under my rug when some nimrod is coming up the road (3 miles away) at 4am...then the moron finally arrives by your location and there you see some us economy weakening foreign made rust and bondo bucket with some kinda mega whale tail wing,...big ole scoop on the hood.....$6K sound system rattling the whole thing to bits pumping out some other moron or group of morons growling and grinding out some kinda hate and rage.....(death metal?) oh yea...and riding on rent to own rims, with those goofy looking quadraphonic JC Whitney bolt-on exhaust tip jugs. WTF??? takes me back to the early to mid 80's when JC carried the Look-alike cell phone antennas...impress all your friends krap.....well I've got to tell ya, ...I'm NOT IMPRESSED!!!! I realize you dumbf@qes can no longer hear this Shi$ your broadcasting over a 5 mile radius,....but really...grow da Fuk up!

I actually love fart cans, so long as they're done the right way. I hate seeing loose, floppy, rusted tin cans bobbing at the ass end of some rusted up beater. Some of them sound like crap, yes, but some can still sound nice. I used to have a 2000 Cavalier in high school, and had the entire exhaust from the resonator back redone with a 3A Racing fart can. I'm not saying it was the most powerful car ever, but it had a nice, deep tone to it that I really liked. So long as it looks nice, doesn't stick out past the bumber by ten inches, is properly attatched, and sounds good, I will always admire a great old fart can.

Not a fan of a fart can for the sake of supposed looks and sound. Much better ways to get a good sound out of a car. Still each to their own. I still think a freshly built 2 stroke V8 diesel is one of the sweetest sounding engines. Most probably wouldn't.

Nothing but hate for 'em. I need thunder. I need rumble, or I need quiet. I don't want a freaking horn section fitted on my exhaust. Grew up with big displacement engines roaring, not smaller engines winding thousands of RPMs higher, so I guess it's partly my age that's a factor of my dislike for these things. My Supra sure as hell won't get a fart can.

Honestly aside from a nice rumble at idle I like a softer exhaust than I think many do. Its nice to pull from a stoplight without cops thinking your racing plus it really fills the sleeper void nicely to have just a little rumble. If you have power its going to make some noise when you stomp on it regardless of what you have for exhaust but a stupid little car with no power it just seems like some little d bag screaming for attention.

So I have a properly modified exhaust on mine, and it is loud and deep. But I don't get the difference between a fart can and any exhaust on a 4-banger. They all sound loud and bassy it seems. Any examples of the differences?

Avatar By: SouthernGuy8503

gold94corolla - At least in my "book" a fart can are those exhaust tips that are roughly 4 inches in diameter. 3 inch tip is almost pushing it for a 4 banger but it's not to big since you see 3 inch tips on every kind of vehicle (including my truck lol). But 4 inch or bigger tip is just to big. Also the car doesn't need a big ass tip to say it has a fart can, it needs that high pitch sound, the deeper ones I still don't care for but I won't laugh at those, the high pitch ones I will laugh at lol. So basically if you hear one that sounds like it's a 125cc dirt bike with no muffler then that's a fart can exhaust. So the definition might be different to other people but that's mine lol. The tip on the HHR in the pic above would be fine if it was tucked back and under the bumper like it should be, but it's like they took it and just put it on the factory tip so it sticks out.

There is a such ting as a decent sounding now power car. Most people get those cars and then go the extreme cheap way to be louder than stock to make people think it's uber fast. Then you have people who refuse to put a resonator on the mid-pipe to remove the horrid rasp. It's hard but possible to even butcher a V8 exhaust setup. Go to YouTube if you don't believe me.

I pretty much hate "fart cans" as a whole. If you want a good sounding exhaust do what I did buy either a Remus or a Pacesetter, yeah there $400 for a muffler but it is well worth it. My Mk3 GTI VR6 has a Remus and it sounds like a high end sports car.

i totally agree i may not have a ton of performance mods done to my car but the one thing i made sure of was to get a decent catback exhaust that has a deeper tone to it so i dont sound like a damn weedwhacker driving down the road i will admit i wish it sounded deeper and more aggresive but that will come with the rest of the engine mods i have planned.

People seem to be confused. A "Fart Can" in a cheesy giant MUFFLER welded to the OEM exhaust pipes. Before you call a Civic or 240s exhaust Fart can look at the piping.

All Honda's should be required by law to put Mugen exhausts only! They're not loud until your Vtec kicks in so that way is not being loud when you're only going 15mph on a parking lot.

i got a fart can on my sunfire, and it has stock pipes(till spring) and it sounds decent, its a good quality, i made sure before i bought it, and it sounded good on my 98 sunfire, and it sounds even better on my 03 sunfire, i will admit, its really loud, but nothing a real long resonator wont fix once i get my catback bent up

Yeah I have a friend with a 4 banger 96 civic and he got one. Sounds like shit. I used to laugh everytime he got on it and then I could fly right past him with no problems. But thats not near the worst sound cause it atleast makes you laugh. The worst is these kids running around in there 4x4 trucks with the cats cut, with Flowmaster straight pipes getting 10 miles to the gallon and all I here is a bunch of cracking when they accelerate over 2000 rpm. Sounds like shit and it makes the truck perform worse.

Iasis - The ones you're talking about are most like glasspacks, not Flowmasters. I don't think I've ever heard Flowmasters on a truck that had crackling, Flowmaster has always at least had a clear sound. Also my 98 Silverado didn't preform any worse since it came with true dual exhaust from the factory, just had a single big ass muffler, but it had 2 cats, 2 separate sides, basically the muffler also acted the same as the crossover pipe to even own back pressure. Well when I got my truck it was stock exhaust but someone had the muffler taken out and had 2 Flowmasters put in but they didn't put a crossover pipe in. I put in an X pipe which helped it enough performance wise for me to feel a difference when I was leaving. It's a fine line with exhaust, you need enough back pressure but not to free flowing, so you almost need to have it as free flowing without loosing too much back pressure. So me personally I'd much rather hear a loud V8 over a 4 or 6 cylinder that sounds like a 125cc dirt bike without a muffler. I'd even rather hear a loud ass bass system than a "fart can" sound out of a 4 or 6 cylinder. I've literally had farts that sounded better than "fart can" sound exhaust.

I like a nice throaty sound to an exhaust, that being said, you can only get that with a good exhaust and some decent mods. Fart cans simply sound like a weedwacker jacked-up on crack XP IMO. I wouldn't hate them so much if it weren't for the drivers using them. In most cases they are people that think they're the sh*t in town and sound off their exhaust at 2 in the morning when I'm trying to sleep. There is a time to show off...and a time to stay quiet, specially if your car isn't worth showing off. So I'd say my main hate for the fart-cans is the people (at least in my experience) who use them for the shear pleasure of making noise, any noise.

I have a fart can on my 1992 Nissan 180SX. But the exhaust is 2.75" downpipe back with a de-cat. The car makes 251.7WHP on 13psi at this altitude so I think its acceptable to have an aftermarket exhaust. I would rather a clean dual tip though but I cant complain because the current exhaust came with the car.
