Total Chaos In Seattle

Yesterday, we had our first snowfall of the winter here in the Emerald City, and from the way people were driving you'd think it was the first snowfall of the century. Of course, it didn't help that the snow had turned to slop mid-afternoon and then re-frozen by nightfall into sheet ice, but still. All of our highways and main roads were turned into parking lots as our overpopulated city tried to empty out all at once after work, and tons of vehicles ended up wrecked into ditches or simply abandoned on the shoulder or in the road after drivers got sick of sitting in standstill traffic in some cases for up to 8 hours. Meanwhile, on the smaller roads through the neighborhoods, these West Coast folks demonstrated that they totally don't understand that what goes up must come down, or that locking up your brakes in a slide can actually make you gain speed. Hit the jump to view one of the many videos of icy-street chaos that have cropped up on YouTube since last night.

And that's precisely why I have studded snow tires for my Cutlass for that kind of weather. It was already unstoppable in two and a half feet of snow last winter on nearly bals all season Uniroyals. I can't wait to see how it performs this year on studs.

Wasn't that a Subaru? If so, it has 4-wheel drive and there's no reason why it couldn't have made it up the hill in that little bit of snow. That was just dumb from the start and only kept getting worse.

I just hate how all the buses are running around with tire chains on, even on the highway. Just ruins the streets especially since they are surprisingly clear.

I tell ya... Seattle looks like fun. It snows and just from that happening it becomes a spectator event. I know I would have been out on foot, probably brought a thermos and dressed warmly... and maybe even have brought a folding chair and large cardboard cards so I can give scores, judging the attempts. We don't have that kind of fun around here and drive-bys aren't good spectator events.

Okay... nobody has brought up the obvious question so I will bite... LOL There's this white stuff they carry around on trucks and it's sprinkled on the roads... It's called Salt. Around here, they even spray water mixed with the stuff on the roads before the flakes even fall... it's called Brine... and when it's time... everything's fine. We don't even have 40 degree inclines like that urban ski slope the genius was trying to ascend... y'know the physics major at the wheel who was storing up all that potential energy until all loss of momentum then traction... but I'll digress. Maybe.

Good tires and some knowledge would have gone a long way...
