Last weekend I finally lofted the Camaro at the shop to see what was ugly underneath. The car barely got what it should have had from its former owner, so I was sure there'd be an ugly legacy for me to deal with. there were some of his legacy left for me to deal with. After replacing the trans mount and surveying an oil leak, I lifted the back up by the pumpkin, intending to fire it up to diagnose a low-speed shimmy in the rear. With the drive wheels spinning, it became apparent that the rear tires were toast, belts warped or broken. They just weren't round anymore. Worse yet, the driver side rear had the edge steel belt poking through. I knew they were bad, but not that bad. Something needed to be done and quick. Continue reading...
I scoured Craigslist, looking for 16" tires that would fit, and I also used the search term "5x120", the Camaro's lug bolt pattern, just in case I could snatch a set of rims with decent tires already on 'em. What I found was that someone in my town had a set of aftermarket rims--taken off a 3rd gen Camaro--with virtually new tires on them for $150. I talked him down to $100...
One of the rims had a bend which I knocked out nicely, and now they're on the car. The offset on these is more shallow and the tires aren't low-pros, but they look great on the car, it's not a death trap anymore, driving is more enjoyable, and the handling is great.
I put my own stock Camaro rims on Craigslist for $150. I might take $100...

By: DaveyBoyo 11/16/2010 2:46 PM Bud, you need to learn how to write before posting. I honestly have no idea what you just said aside from the fact that it had something to do with wheels and a pumpkin. |

By: ___nes___ 11/16/2010 4:09 PM Deal of the century indeed! Too bad I can't find any deals like that, all I ever find is people giving massages in furry costumes. |

By: SouthernGuy8503 11/16/2010 5:58 PM DaveyBoyo - Every blog post is proof read before published. If you couldn't understand what he was talking about then you don't understand the mechanics of cars at all, not even the basics. |

By: SuzyBruisy 11/16/2010 6:06 PM I like the tall sidewalls on the new tires. Looks hot! Do check the DOT codes to make sure they're not more than 6 or 8 years old, even if the tread looks "virtually new". Hitting the wall after a dryrot-induced blowout will instantly negate all savings. |

|
By: SouthernGuy8503 11/16/2010 8:12 PM Ya I found out earlier in the year about how to basically "decode" the DOT # to see when the tire was made and luckily mine were made roughly only 3 months before I bought them. |

By: HotHeadRacing 11/16/2010 11:21 PM My brother got Ford Racing FR500 with almost new tires and a spare set of back tires which are also almost new all for 400 thats a pretty good deal too |

By: GTwildfire 11/17/2010 2:54 PM Davey, Sorry I used so many words, bro. Here's the breakdown and I hope you'll understand... I bought tires and rims for $100. I have the original rims (the ones that were on the car) for sale and might break even. If you can't grasp that at least I know I tried. SUUZE I forgot to mention the tires are only 2 years old, had been garaged and there is ZERO rot. |

By: TheDotCommunist 11/17/2010 3:29 PM @Southernguy, Daveyboyo is right. This is not proofread, or if it was it was done so VERY quickly and poorly. There is a capitalization issue, punctuation problems, verb/subject agreement issues, and even a switch between past and present tense. This is the inherent problem of having user-generated content. I understood the post and have no problem with it, I just don't like the whole idea behind autoholics.com. It's just not a good concept, and as a result, the whole site is filling with sub-par posts. Btw, I am a journalist, so I'm admittedly a little more picky than the average user. |

By: SouthernGuy8503 11/17/2010 4:16 PM TheDotCommunist - Well also you need to realize that a blog isn't a college paper so it doesn't need to be 100% perfect, as long as it doesn't look real bad. If it was looked over to fast it was because they have too much to do. They don't exactly have someone that's specifically for proof reading blog submissions. Also not every submission is published, there's 201 published and I bet there's been twice as many submitted if not more. This isn't a sub-par post in my opinion, you should see how some people type in blog comments and forums. Some type like they never made it out of elementary school or that they're texting the comments. "GTwildfire" also isn't just a use that comes around the cardomain blog once in a while, like me and a few others he comes on here everyday commenting. In my opinion autoholics is better because the old cardomain blog you either had asked or be asked to submit blogs, now anybody can submit them but it's no guarantee that it will be published. So basically if you don't like autoholics then bye bye, you won't be missed. Especially since this is the first comment I've seen you type. Of course I don't care if you stay on here or not but if you don't like it then don't come on here, that simple. |
|

By: TheDotCommunist 11/17/2010 4:37 PM I know both of you two, not personally of course, but I've been coming to Cardomain for over 5 years, so don't give me that shit. You two should know better. If you love this site so much, put more effort into your posts and comments. The overall quality of this site has dropped dramatically now that everyone is allowed to post. If you have "too much to do" then don't post on the blog. Its simple. Also, commenting on every insignificant post you see does not make you a valuable contributor to the site. I've posted many times on the original site, so again, don't give me that shit. You and GT need to grow up; those rankings on the side of the site mean you have too much time on your hands. |

By: SouthernGuy8503 11/17/2010 5:57 PM TheDotCommunist - I guess you can't read all that great, I said "If it was looked over to fast it was because they have too much to do." which I was talking about the ones that proof read the submissions before publishing, not the person that submitted the blog. Also putting effort into a blog submission doesn't mean it has to be 100% perfect with grammar, just as long as it's not screwed up. Not everybody is an English teacher. So like I said, if you don't like autoholics then don't be on it, that simple. Didn't say to not use cardomain all together, just not the new autoholics blog. Doesn't take a journalist to see that, so don't give me that shit. Also I don't care about those rankings, I don't comment just to see how many comments I can make. I make comments because I want to give an opinion. If all I did was comment just for the hell of it then I would type nothing but short ones, anybody that's been on the cardomain blog regularly knows I usually type pretty long comments even on this new autoholics. Also if all I did was make comments just for the hell of it then Jen wouldn't have invited me to be a contributor on the old blog. So again if you don't like autoholics then oh well, don't come on it. |

By: GTwildfire 11/17/2010 7:37 PM Wow, a journalist upset with bloggers. That's a new one. I can't tell you how many times I have critiqued journalists' articles in major news sites so DotCommunist, kudos to you. I will take your advice to heart, and will read through my work more carefully... Seriously. Autoholics has been a reorganization to separate the blog and extend more invitation and incentive for members to participate, but the invitation for members to participate in the blog has been extended for a long time. Nobody has complained until now, at least not with such vigor. I haven't noticed whether you have blogged but I hope you will. I promise I will be nice in the comments. Now I want to check out your ride... |

By: TheDotCommunist 11/17/2010 8:22 PM This is not an attack on either GT or SouthernGuy, and I'll apologize for coming across with such intensity. My gripe is with the cardomain crew for taking on such a huge undertaking without a serious copy editor. I'm not an English professor, and I don't plan on becoming one. I've just been an avid reader of cardomain blogs for some time now, and I used to hold them in the same light as I do the Hemmings blogs, which are well-funded and very well-edited. If I've learned anything in my time on this Earth, it's not to get invested in online arguments, so lets all just relax and not be at each other's throats. btw GT, I'm not actually a communist lol. Thanks for checking out my rides. |

By: GTwildfire 11/17/2010 9:04 PM Hey if I was better funded I would post better blogs. ;-) |

By: GTwildfire 11/17/2010 9:11 PM I can see how your expectations would be more stringent, being a journalist. I'm a designer and curse frequently (understating it a bit, I'm rabid sometimes) over others' piss poor designs, especially when I have to deal with them in the real world. Why should it have to be different for you and your expectations? I'm sure as hell not gonna tone down my expectations, especially when I have to use a 24" extension and universal with a 1/2 inch impact gun to reach some manifold exhaust flange bolts. No, in fact my next addition to the workshop will be a wet bar. |

By: TheDotCommunist 11/17/2010 9:25 PM I really admire that your not some forum troll that wants a war lol. I honestly wasn't trying to start one. I also want to be clear that I wasn't bashing your contributions. It's just a little frustrating when the cardomain crew publishes without editing. I know a lot of the people that want to/will submit blogs are not writers, and I'm not going to hate on any of them for little stupid mistakes. |
|

By: SouthernGuy8503 11/17/2010 10:03 PM I'm not a little forum or blog troll either even though I seem to get into a lot of arguments on here. I just have no problem giving responses and what I want to say. Believe it or not I hate to argue even though it looks like on here I like to. Just realize even the cardomain crew aren't English professors or have English degrees so even them make mistakes. I know every blog I had published on the old blog wasn't really corrected in a sense but more of reworded to sound better. I like how they're letting "regular" people post blogs to, not just people paid to write columns. Trust me I think the better ones are from people that want to submit blogs than someone getting paid, especially if they feel forced to just write anything. I know you've read or come across columns that wasn't even worth reading let alone being wrote, just looked like they had nothing else to write about. The cardomain crew also wouldn't publish just anything, only if they feel that it's basically good enough. I know you want the grammar to be right but if the mistake(s) is so minimal that nobody would notice except for someone that uses grammar everyday then I don't think it's a huge deal. Plus sometimes it could just be a simple typo. So my points is ya spelling and grammar should be right so cardomain looks professional but little things isn't a huge deal. Plus, also realize that it's "regular" people that read these blogs, not English professors. I bet that people could understand a blog with minor grammar mistakes than a post with 0 mistakes and perfect grammar. It's not like they'll let someone post a blog with speling lik dis. I'm not really the type to talk shit to someone's grammar or spelling unless it's so bad it feels like I lost IQ points from just reading it. But, I guess I'm just a dumb redneck lol. |

By: GTwildfire 11/18/2010 12:48 AM I'm sure Jen's reading all this. Jen, you freakin' ROCK, girl. One thing I failed to mention and reall have to is that she has taken my drivel on more than one occasion and managed to knock it into coherence. That's a challenge because I swing wildly on occasion somewhere between village idiot mumblings and Einsteinesque inspirations. I think I've worn her out, I must have. What I have written has been edited and was improved vastly sometimes. Some of my writings have fallen through the cracks, lol probably into the waste basket. It's all good though.
